Myōgi, Gunma

Myōgi (妙義町, Myōgi-machi) was a town located in Kanra District, Gunma Prefecture, Japan.

On March 27, 2006, Myōgi was merged into the expanded city of Tomioka.[1]

In 2003, the town had an estimated population of 4,901 and a density of 170.41 persons per km2. The total area was 28.76 km2.

Massacre

On February 7, 1900, a man killed seven people at the Myōgi shrine. he stole a sword from a policeman, killed the chief priest and three attendants, and then turned against the crowd who had rushed to the scene, murdering three other people, before he himself was killed.[2][3][4]
