Asturias is a province that is coextensive with the autonomous community of Asturias, Spain. The province is divided into 78 municipalities. As of the 2025 Spanish census, Ávila is the 14th most populous of Spain's 50 provinces, with 1,015,128 inhabitants,[1] and the 21st largest by land area, spanning 10,605.70 square kilometres (4,094.88 sq mi).[2][3] Municipalities are the most basic local political division in Spain and can only belong to one province.[4][5] They enjoy a large degree of autonomy in their local administration, being in charge of tasks such as urban planning, water supply, lighting, roads, local police, and firefighting.[6] Muncipalities also belong to a comarca, a second level administrative unit.
