The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing[a] is a government ministry in Saudi Arabia responsible for overseeing and regulating municipalities across the Kingdom, as well as supervising urban development and the housing sector.[1]
History
The ministry was established in 1975 as the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs to oversee urban planning, infrastructure, and municipal services across Saudi Arabia.[2]
In 2003, it took over the responsibilities of the dissolved Ministry of Public Works and Housing, while a separate Ministry of Housing was created in 2011 to address growing national housing needs.[3]
In January 2021, the two entities were merged, and in July 2024, the ministry was renamed the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing to reflect its expanded role in integrated urban development and improving quality of life in Saudi cities.[4][5]
