The Meziměstí–Ścinawka Średnia railway (Czech: Železniční trať Meziměstí–Otovice zastávka–Ścinawka Średnia; German until 1945: Halbstadt–Mittelsteine) is a historical cross-border railway line linking Meziměstí in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic with Ścinawka Średnia in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland. The line was opened in stages between 1875 and 1889. Today, regular passenger traffic survives only on the eastern Czech section between Meziměstí and Broumov.[1][2]
The route forms part of the historic network of railways that connected the Broumov region with Lower Silesia and the industrial districts around Wałbrzych. In the nineteenth century it created a direct rail link between the Austrian and Prussian systems, joining the Choceň–Meziměstí railway at Meziměstí and the Wałbrzych–Kłodzko railway at Ścinawka Średnia.[3]
Route
From Meziměstí the line branches off the Choceň–Meziměstí railway and runs westward through Ruprechtice and Hynčice to Broumov-Olivětín and Broumov. Beyond Broumov it continues through Otovice and the former halt of Otovice zastávka to the Czech–Polish border.[4]
On the Polish side the railway descends via Tłumaczów and Ścinawka Górna to Ścinawka Średnia, where it joins the Wałbrzych–Kłodzko railway. The route crosses the Stěnava (Polish: Ścinawka) several times and historically served both local settlements and industrial sidings.[5][6]
History
The line was opened in three stages. According to the Czech railway atlas, the section from Meziměstí to Broumov entered service on 26 July 1875, the extension from Broumov to Otovice zastávka on 26 July 1876, and the cross-border section from Otovice zastávka to the state border and onward toward Ścinawka Średnia on 5 April 1889.[7]
The railway was built as part of the broader programme of connecting the Bohemian and Silesian borderlands. Meziměstí developed into an important junction where trains from Choceň and Náchod met routes toward Wałbrzych and Lower Silesia.[8]
Cross-border passenger traffic ceased in the twentieth century, and the western Czech section beyond Broumov gradually lost regular service. A European overview of closed railway sections lists Broumov–Otovice zastávka as having ceased operation in December 2005.[9] In current passenger operation, the Czech timetable line 027 covers only the Meziměstí–Broumov section.[10]
On the Polish side, the section from Ścinawka Średnia to Tłumaczów was later rebuilt for freight use connected with the melaphyre quarry. A 2020 industry report stated that the Ścinawka Średnia–Tłumaczów line had been rebuilt around 2010 at the expense of the quarry operator and was then used for rail shipment of stone within Poland, while attempts continued to restore the remaining cross-border section toward Otovice.[11]
Infrastructure
The line is a standard-gauge, non-electrified railway. The Czech railway atlas gives a total length of about 24.2 km and lists the line class as C2 between Meziměstí and Broumov and A1 between Broumov and Otovice zastávka.[12]
Part of the Polish section now functions as a private industrial railway linked with the quarry at Tłumaczów. The siding statute published by the operator states that the private network of the Tłumaczów melaphyre quarry is connected to the national network at Ścinawka Średnia.[13]
Operations
Scheduled passenger services currently operate only between Meziměstí and Broumov as part of the Czech timetable route 027.[14] West of Broumov, the route is out of regular passenger use, while on the Polish side the surviving active part serves freight movements connected with quarry traffic.[15][16]
