Masameer: The Movie (Arabic: مسامير: الفيلم) is a 2020 Saudi Arabian adult animated superhero comedy film directed by Malik Nejer (in his directorial debut) and written by Nejer & Abdulaziz Almuzaini.[3] It is based on the web series Masameer created by Malik Nejer.[4] It is the first animated film made entirely in Saudi Arabia.[5]

Plot

When a deliveryman arrives to a house, Saltooh meets a man who says that their house will be demolished for lowering estate prices, causing pollution and being a general nuisance. They plan to build a restroom building in its place. In the house, Trad is seen putting Saad under a test which Saad lasted for 3 hours and 20 minutes until quitting. When Saltooh told the two their house is going to be demolished, their house was demolished.

They ended up being homeless. Three have struggles with Saad tell he was a MIT graduate and he hasn't done anything meaningful until now and Saltooh tell that his mother calls him seeing if he has got a job, married someone and has children. They met an overweight man who looks in trash bins for treasure, the man found a Rolex, and a scooter complete with a helmet. After that, the three tried to search in a bin, but they were unlucky as they only found junk.

Meanwhile, a woman named Dana who was passionate about Artificial Intelligence was building a prototype for a robot named Fazzee who helps people, but the robot ended up accidentally destroying a car. Tomorrow, Saltooh, Saad and Trad create their own costume and grab weapons to fight the man. Saad ends up throwing the spear to him, and winning the battle.

They looked in the bin, Trad found a letter saying that they're invited to the Society of Heroes with Extraordinary Abilities. Trad decided to call their group the Three Gorooms. Dana wakes up and watches the TV. She hears that Dr. Adel tell news report that the Society of Heroes with Extraordinary Abilities is accepting applications and tryouts at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center with Dr. Adel told news report that the world will always need superheroes.

At the Convention and Exhibition Center, where Dr. Adel hosts applications. Trad tell two they are going join to the Society of Heroes with Extraordinary Abilities, but they get rejected and kicked out by Dr. Adel because no costume. All the following applicants get rejected. She come and bring Fazzee, is made to support people but gets rejected. At the main stage, Dr. Adel's superhero identity, Captain D, put a dangerous biological weapon in safe hands and that evil has been reduced by 99%. However, Bandar's supervillain identity, AlMuthi, steals the biological weapon.

As the rejected applicants meet together. Dana talks how they could start a better superhero club than Captain D's. Trad decides to establish the Extraordinary Gorooms. Three went to an official building to get a sponsor. Saltooh accepts a deal consisting of a car. After finding out that their car is rundown, they decide to renovate it.

In his lair, Bandar talks to Mane about the biological weapon he hope will be tomorrow. Nafea arrives in Adel's office, where he angry them biological weapon has been stolen with Adel told that he will get it back. At their headquarters, Trad discover that Saltooh has invited members of their club, but Trad refuses members come, they close the door leaving Dana alone.

Tomorrow, Bandar and Mane bring the biological weapon to the Kingdom Centre where they start a vlog, Saad and Trad take action. They go behind Dr. Adel's car starting a chase between them resulting each others. When Adel arrived, he chases Bandar and fights him in the Kingdom Centre eventually resulting in the former using dynamite to destroy the Kingdom Centre. Trad runs over Bandar and gets the briefcase, Nafea comes and find out the briefcase is empty. Others believe Fazzee have the weapon, Fazzee pulls out another weapon causing mass destruction, but Dana with the help of Dr. Barbain's superhero identity, Captain Wisdom, manage to stop the robot from causing more destruction. Adel manages to get the biological weapon only for it to open.

At an event, Nafea gets chickenpox and Muneer announces that Dr. Adel and Nafea saved the city from total annihilation. Meanwhile in the hospital, Trad gets angry that they didn't get any respect. Dana arrives and tells a story about a hunter who found a harmed baby gazelle while hunting the mother gazelle, saved instead of hunting the mother gazelle it and found gold. Trad gets a call from the mayor of Riyadh that he, Saltooh and Saad will get a suitable reward once they are out of the hospital. They notice that the restroom building where their house once was now has a sign to honour them.

Release

It was released on January 9, 2020, in Arab theaters.[6] Its international premiere was on March 19, 2020, on Netflix.[7]

As of March 2023, the film was removed from Netflix. But was eventually bought back in 2024.

Future

On September 16, 2020, Myrkott Animation Studio signed a 5-year exclusivity deal with Netflix to produce shows and movies focused on Saudi society with a focus on producing more of Masameer.[8][9] Masameer County Season 2 premiered on March 2, 2023, on its platform.[10]
