Marius Borg Høiby (born 13 January 1997) is a Norwegian public figure.[1] He is the first child of Mette-Marit, Crown Princess of Norway. When Høiby was four years old, his mother became Crown Princess of Norway when she married Crown Prince Haakon. Høiby is part of the Norwegian royal family,[1][2][3][4] as the stepson of the crown prince.[5]
A 28 day criminal trial against Høiby ended on 19 March 2026.[6][7][8][9][10] The verdict is expected in early June.[11][12] He has made video clips of genitalia of 4 women that he went to bed with; he put a finger into each of those women's genital area; he was on trial for doing that while the women allegedly were helpless or sleeping, and as a consequence he was tried for allegedly raping those; he was in a close relationship with another woman, and later with yet another, and he was on trial for hitting both, and for acting in a threatening manner against those two.[6] He pleaded guilty to transportation of marijuana within Norway, and the prosecutor asked for 11 months prison sentence (for that transport); in addition, a total of 6 months have been requested for yet some additional crimes.[13]
He is being held at Oslo Prison.[14][15]
Early life
Høiby was born on 13 January 1997 at Aker University Hospital in Oslo[16] to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, then a waitress, and Morten Borg.[17] His parents were not in a committed relationship 'but after a short affair, Mette-Marit became pregnant'.[18][19][2][20][21][22][2][19][18] In the summer of 1997, a few months after Marius was born, Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby entered into a relationship with a disc jockey and self-described "life artist" from Oslo who was ten years her senior.[20] He became Marius' first stepfather and lived with them for the next year.[20] In the summer of 1998, Mette-Marit ended the relationship and returned to her childhood home in Kristiansand.[20] There, she raised Marius with her new partner, also a local disc jockey, until the couple separated a little under a year later in early 1999.[20][18]
When Mette-Marit entered the public spotlight as the girlfriend of Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway, Høiby was nicknamed "Little Marius" by the media.[2] The nickname stuck; it was also used by Queen Sonja.[18] The nickname is derived from a character in the 1883 novel Poison, who – like Høiby – is illegitimate and is a perceived outsider.[23] Høiby has been known to the public since December 2000, because he was a participant when official Christmas photographs of the royal family, were taken at The Royal Lodge, Holmenkollen.[5][24]
Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby and Prince Haakon announced their engagement in December 2000.[25] The fact that Mette-Marit was a single mother and the fact that Høiby's father was a convicted felon created controversy. TV 2 later wrote that "merely by existing, Marius Borg Høiby was seen by many as a scandal for the royal family."[18] The couple married on 25 August 2001.[26]
Høiby is not part of the Norwegian royal family and does not serve in a public role.[27][28] He is constitutionally barred from becoming king of Norway.[26] In a documentary filmed when Mette-Marit was pregnant with Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, Princess Ragnhild, Mrs. Lorentzen, the sister of King Harald V, expressed concern about how things would turn out for Høiby, saying: 'I feel terribly sorry for her son. When they have a child, poor Marius will be nothing. He is six years old, but he will understand that there is a difference. That will cause problems for them. I hope they have thought it through'".[29] Høiby's maternal grandfather, Sven O. Høiby, spoke publicly about Høiby during his childhood, stating that his grandson should be given the title of prince to avoid feeling second-class and becoming a target of bullying.[18]
Høiby has multiple half- or step-siblings through each of his parents, including Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus on his mother's side.[30][31]
Education and career
Høiby attended Wang High School in Oslo.[32] In 2017, he enrolled in business studies in the United States,[33] but dropped out after a few months without completing a degree. In late 2017, Høiby moved back to Norway briefly before working as an intern for designer Philipp Plein.[34] He then worked as a style editor for the UK-based fashion magazine Tempus until its closure in December 2018.[35]
Personal life
Høiby has had a series of high-profile relationships. He has dated heiress Linn Helena Nilsen,[34][36] model and actress Juliane Snekkestad,[37][38] and influencer Nora Haukland.[39] In 2024, Høiby answered to authorities that Prince Haakon "together with the crown princess" paid his bills. Høiby received 20,000 kroner each month.[40][41]
Høiby has invited members of the Hells Angels criminal gang to events at his home that he called "Skaugum festivals" at which Mette-Marit personally received his guests. Drugs were consumed at these events.[42][43] As of December 2024, Høiby had started a program of drug rehabilitation.[44] As of 2025, Høiby does not have a diplomatic passport. In 2024, media stated that he had abused the privilege of holding a diplomatic passport.[45]
Legal issues
Høiby was fined 4,000 Norwegian kroner for drug possession (in 2017) at the Palmesus festival at Bystranda in Kristiansand.[46]
He has been on remand for 5 weeks at Oslo Prison, as of 10 March 2026.[47] [48][49] 19 March [was] the closing day of the trial. The verdict is expected in early June.[11][12]
Alleged domestic violence and sex offenses
In 2024, Høiby was arrested, jailed, and released several times.[50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60] On 19 November, it was announced that Høiby was also charged with "abuse in close relationships", violating a restraining order, and driving without a valid driver's license.[59]
In 2024, results of a blood test were found to be consistent with recent use of "cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis"; the testing was done [lawfully], while he was detained by police.[61]
On 18 August 2025, the prosecuting authority presented the indictment against Høiby.[62] Høiby was charged with 4 counts of rape; the 34 other charges included domestic violence.[63][64] One indictment regarded the (alleged) rape of Linni Meister.[65] Høiby was also charged with abuse in intimate relationships against his former partner Nora Haukland and with several acts of violence against another former partner.[62] The media claims (as of November 2024) that Høiby and his family have received preferential treatment from police.[61]
On 1 February 2026, Høiby was arrested on both new and separate criminal allegations of assault, threats with a knife and violation of a restraining order.[66] On 2 February 2026, the Oslo District Court granted a police request to keep Høiby in detention for four weeks.[66][67] On 3 March 2026, Høiby would be charged with both reckless behaviour and violating a restraining order, thus bringing the total number of criminal charges he was facing at this point in time to 40.[68][69]
Høiby [was] tried on 38 criminal counts, including rape and domestic violence;[70] in addition, 6 counts were added in mid-February 2026: one count of drugs [possession], three counts of speeding on motorcycle, and two counts of violating restraining order.[71] One more count was added, in early March.[72] One count was dropped, in mid-March, regarding violating a restraining order.[73]
Trial in 2026
On 19 March 2026, a 28-day criminal trial against Høiby ended in Oslo District Court.[74][75][8][76]
At the beginning of the trial, he pleaded not guilty to four charges of rape. He pleaded partially guilty, to aggravated assault and reckless behaviour.[77] He pleaded guilty to transportation of marijuana, within Norway. Other charges were sexual assault, bodily harm, abuse of a partner, violating a restraining order.[78][9][79]
All four incidents where rape was alleged, had started out with consensual[11] sex.
That the prosecution have been operating a theory about [Høiby's modus operandi or] modus-teori, has been alleged by the defence lawyer.[11]
Alleged rape at Skaugum
A video clip from 2018, has been shown in court; it shows an alleged victim laying on a white sofa at Skaugum; below her waist, she is naked; the video clip shows a tatooed hand with a thumb ring; the hand is touching the woman's body, and [goes on to] insert a finger into her [, below the waist, or into her] underliv.[80] Journalists did not get to see the video clip; video clips from Skaugum, were shown in court on 3 February.[81]
The alleged rape victim testified on 3rd and 4th of February;[82] she has [allegedly] not given consent to the filming.[80] She thinks that "she had been drugged", according to media.[81]
Earlier that night (in 2018), she and Høiby were in [a bathroom at Skaugum, or] toalettet together, according to her; furthermore, he lifted her up on the washstand there, and they had sex for a few seconds before she broke off, and said "We can not do it [in] here";[83] she got dressed.[13] Høiby left the bathroom; the activities in the bathroom are not part, of any rape charge.[83] Some years before 2018, according to her testimony, there was another incident in a bathroom together with Høiby: Høiby kissed her and [fondled her, or] tok på henne, and that happened very quick, but she did not view that incident as abuse.[83]
Høiby testified that he has not drug raped anyone; however, media says that the alleged victim had [at Skaugum,] "also had a drink that she did not know the contents of - or who had made [the drink, or] it"; Høiby has not been charged with drugging anyone.[82]
Closing arguments, included: She gave false information to police, under pre-meditation, according to defense lawyer, Petar Sekulic; she said that she never had sexual relations with Høiby; however, the sex in the bathroom was later revealed; sex during Russ celebrations was revealed even later; at one point in time, she said she had been drugged [and not by her doing], and she told a female friend that she had been to a pleasant after-party - and [allegedly] the next thing she remembers is that she woke up in her home; that is shown to not be true, all the time she also asks another female friend to [perform a] lie in regard to the after-party and what time she returned home; furthermore, why did she lie, asked the defense lawyer; because at that time she wanted to hide the relationship to Høiby, because she was in a relationship with someone else; in regard to her not being credible: the lawyer points to an incident where she laid a trap for Høiby, by leading him out to a street where there was a paparazzi (from a known tabloid), that was waiting in car and took pictures [of Høiby] from the other side of the street.[11]
On 5 February, media said that Linni Meister had already testified.[84]
Other alleged rapes
On 10 February, another alleged rape victim started to testify: the woman-from-Lofoten, or 'alleged-victim-B' (fornærmede B).[8][85]
Closing arguments: She was not truthful, according to the defense lawyer, when she said that the celebrity status of Høiby, did not make him more [attractive or] interesting; furthermore, in an [English] message to a female friend, she wrote «my time to shine»; she also wrote [in Norwegian, that I] "shall become a c-level celebrity" (c-kjendis).[11]
"The hotel case", is another rape case.[86]
Closing arguments: In all the rape cases, the alleged victims have at first viewed the overall encounters as positive experiences, according to the defense lawyer; furthermore, when rape allegations (at Høiby) start circulating online, or when the police comes [or interviews], or when the alleged victims talk to their guide, then the encounters [are labeled as, or] become instances of abuse.[11]
Other alleged crimes
One count was dropped, on 16 March, regarding violating a restraining order; that part of the government's case, had been the justification for the raid and arrest (at the cabin at Skeikampen), which netted the video clips, and the storage devices on which the clips were on.[73]
Courtroom sketches are portraying Høiby as [somewhat scary or] småskummel, according to a media outlet; furthermore, for members of the general public, in the courtroom, it is easy "to become sympathetic – or at least have more understanding for Høiby – when he gets to speak freely while being himself, instead of" who he is portrayed through courtroom sketches: [somewhat scary or] småskummel.[87]
On 18 March, the prosecutor [recommended or] said that Høiby should be sentenced to 7 years and 7 months, in total, in prison;[88] also, the prosecutor has recommended how much each count should be worth in regard to prison time, in case the judges decide that the recommended total, will not be heeded: the alleged rape at Skaugum - 3 years; the alleged rape-including-intercourse and filming in Lofoten - 2 years and 8 months; the case at a hotel and the case (including rape) in Oslo West - 2 years each; the alleged abuse of Nora Haukland is [worth] 11 months, if no other count results in longer punishment (and the alternative is that it should only add five months, to the floor-of-the-verdict; "the floor" is the count that results in the longest prison time); the transportation (within Norway), of 3.5kg marijuana - 11 months (or add 4 months to the floor-of-the-verdict); on top of the mentioned punishment - six months [in total] should be added for: the incidents regarding the Frogner-woman, and the speeding, and flipping the finger to a policeman, and refusing to give [name, date-of-birth, and/or address] information to police, and a death threat.[13] Furthermore, Høiby should be credited for already having served [an equivalent, to] 63 days in jail.[88] The verdict is expected in early June.[11][12][89][90] Three judges will decide the case.[81][91]
Victims of rape or other violence in Norway, can have the right to be granted, by the Norwegian government, victim compensation (or voldsofferstatning), Norwegian kroner c. 250,000.[92][93][94] However, the lawyer for alleged victim "the woman-from-Lofoten", has recommended (on 18 March) that the court verdict should include a payment [as high as] 400,000 (from Høiby), being ordered to that woman;
the lawyer for alleged victim in "the hotel case", has recommended that the verdict should include a payment [as high as] 260,000 plus 230,000 (all from Høiby), being ordered to that woman;. 4 other alleged victims have (lawyers that have) asked for lower sums.[95][13]
It is normal that Norwegian judges ask defendants if they have any financial obligations in regard to giving financial support to offspring or other people (or forsørgeransvar); media has expected that the judge has asked.
Reactions to the governments case against Høiby
On 13 February 2026, Arild Rønsen asked in his column in Klassekampen: "Has the trial been blown out of proportion?"; furthermore, the journalist said that "Illegal filming, however, is something quite different than rape".[96]
Another commentator, Martine Aurdal, has (also) pointed out specific threats to Høiby's right to have a fair trial: the press are only allowed, to a minor degree, to tell about the trial, in regard to things like: "Some, in this crowd [of partygoers] are earning money - on sex in social media"; furthermore, "the crowd is marked by drugs being used widely - and partying that goes on until morning ... several days a week"; furthermore, "[One or more] alleged victim/victims that, according to Høiby, have had consensual sex, with Høiby, up to a hundred times. Also right before the alleged instances of abuse were supposed to have happened, and in some cases only minutes before".[97]
The "Marius case",[98] has been cited as contributing to a decline in the Norwegian royal family's reputation and increased debate about the future of the monarchy in Norway.[99][41]
Reactions
Mette-Marit has been accused of warning her son about his impending arrest and witness tampering.[100][101] In 2026, Høiby testified in court about an interaction with his mother; his testimony made no indication of her doing any act of breaking laws.[102][100][101] As late as mid-March 2026, Høiby was visited in Oslo Prison, by his mother and his stepfather.[14][49]
Høiby is referenced several times in the Epstein files in conversations between his mother and Jeffrey Epstein. When he was 15, his mother and Epstein discussed in emails pictures of naked women she wanted to give him as a wallpaper.[103][104]
In 2025, the Høiby case has been described in Norwegian media as one of the most extensive rape investigations in recent years.[105]
In 2026, Marius Høiby was described as "the boy in the golden cage, the cute, little Marius [that later wound up] in [today's] courtroom".[87]
