The Madawaska School Department is a public school district serving the town of Madawaska, Maine, as well as the neighbouring communities of St. David and Grand Isle. The district is a member of the **Valley Unified Education Service Centre**, a collaborative partnership that shares administrative staff and resources with MSAD 27 (Fort Kent) and MSAD 33 (Frenchville/St. Agatha).

Schools

As of the 2023–2024 school year, the district reorganised its grade configurations to better utilize facility space and resources.

  • Madawaska Elementary School: Located at 353 11th Avenue. Built in 1994, it currently serves students in grades PreK through 5.
  • Madawaska Middle/High School: Located at 135 Seventh Avenue. Following the 2023 reorganisation, the school serves grades 6 through 12. The facility consists of a 1940s-era core with several modern additions.

Regionalization and merger

Since 2018, the Madawaska School Department has been involved in a state-funded regionalisation project to address declining enrollment and aging infrastructure in the Saint John Valley. In early 2026, the school committee moved forward with plans for a formal merger with MSAD 33. A public referendum is scheduled for November 2026 to decide the future of a proposed regional PreK–12 facility that would replace the existing aging buildings in both districts.

Former schools

Several former school buildings in Madawaska have been decommissioned or demolished as the district consolidated:

  • Acadia School: Built in 1935, it originally served as the high school and later as an elementary school. It was closed and repurposed into a medical facility and professional office suite.
  • Evangeline School: Built in 1927, it served as an elementary school for several decades. The building was demolished following the construction of the current elementary school in 1994; a Walgreens pharmacy now occupies the site.
