Macrotermes gilvus[1] is a species of termite in the family Termitidae, found in Cambodia, East Timor, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.[2]
They also make fungus combs, which, when mature enough, will sprout special mushrooms.[3]
Taxonomy
Macrotermes gilvus is estimated to have likely emerged 2.67 million years ago.[4]
Part of the newly emerged Macrotermes genus, they are also related to Macrotermes nnandalei and Macrotermes chaiglomi.[4]
Behavior
Macrotermes gilvus termites are typically aggressive with other colonies.[5] They typically forage for fungus buds after growing.
