African Movement for New Independence and Democracy
The African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (French: Mouvement africain pour la nouvelle indépendance et la démocratie, MANIDEM) is a left-wing nationalist political party in Cameroon.[1][2]
History
The party broke away from the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC), and originally used the acronym UPC-MANIDEM.[3] The party was legalized in 1995.[4]
During the 2025 Cameroonian presidential election, the party registered the support of Maurice Kamto and his leadership.[5]
On 1 December 2025, Anicet Ekane, the 74-year-old leader of MANIDEM, died in custody after being arrested a month prior during a crackdown in the country.[6]
