Louis Mourot (4 March 1923 – 7 February 2016) was a French Resistance member, deportee, and survivor of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He was arrested by the Gestapo for his resistance activities and was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen from 1943 to 1945.[1][2]
Early life
Louis Mourot was born on 4 March 1923 in Nancy, in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, France.[3]
Resistance activity
During the German occupation of France, Mourot joined the French Resistance. According to Mémoire Vive de la Résistance, he founded the clandestine movement Défense de la Patrie (DP) at Neufchâteau and structured it from 1941 onward.[4] Archival and historical sources also identify Mourot as one of the early Resistance figures associated with the creation of Défense de la Patrie in Lorraine.[5][6]
Arrest and deportation
Because of his resistance activities, Mourot was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Nazi Germany. He was held there from 1943 until 1945 and survived the camp.[7][8] A memorial source records his prisoner number as 57796.[9]
Later life
Mourot later lived in Aix-les-Bains. In 2014, Le Dauphiné libéré published a profile describing him as a survivor of Sachsenhausen who continued to testify publicly about his wartime experience.[10]

Obituary notices state that Mourot was a commandeur de la Légion d'honneur and held several wartime and commemorative distinctions, including the Croix de Guerre 1939–1945 with palm, the Croix du combattant volontaire de la Résistance, the Médaille de la déportation et de l'internement politique, and the gold medal of the city of Nancy for acts of resistance.[11][12]
