List of storms named Rai
The name Rai (Yapese: raay) has been used for two tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific Ocean. The name was contributed by the Federated States of Micronesia and refers to rai stones, large donut-shaped stone relics used as ceremonial gifts in Yapese.[1] It replaced Fanapi (Chuukese: Fánáápi), which refers to a group of low-lying sandy atolls in northwest Chuuk in Chuukese, after it was retired following the 2010 Pacific typhoon season. That replaced Rananim (Chuukese: ráán ánnim), which means "hello" in Chuukese, after it was retired following the 2004 Pacific typhoon season.[2]
- Tropical Storm Rai (2016) (T1615, 19W) – a short-lived storm that made landfall on Indochina.
- Typhoon Rai (2021) (T2122, 28W, Odette) – a powerful Category 5-equivalent super typhoon that caused severe and widespread damage in the Southern and Central Philippines.
The name Rai was retired following the 2021 Pacific typhoon season and was replaced with Sarbul (Yapese: sarbul), which means monsoonal winds in Yapese.[3]
