List of negative numbers

In mathematics, negative numbers are the opposite or additive inverse of a positive number. Negative numbers are also defined as a number that is less than zero. This list includes notable negative numbers.

−0 - Signed zero, usually equivalent to zero, but separate in many computing representations including floating point.

−1 - The largest negative integer. Multiplying a number by −1 is equivalent to changing its sign. The square of −1 is 1. Therefore, the square of any negative number is a positive number. The square root of −1 is i. Also the lowest y-value of a sine wave.

−2 - The largest even negative integer. Negative two makes a triangular number.[1] Only nine integers have this property, with negative two being the smallest: −2, −1, 0, 1, 4, 5, 9, 56, and 636.[2]

−40 - The point at which Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are the same. −40 °C = −40 °F.
