The Leeden Viaduct is a railway viaduct in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of south-western Poland. It carries the Kłodzko Główne–Wałbrzych Główny railway across a valley near present-day Jugów and Nowa Ruda.[1] The structure is 186 m (610 ft) long.[1]

Historically, the viaduct was known in German as the Leeden-Viadukt bei Kunzendorf.[2]

History

The viaduct formed part of the mountainous railway between Glatz (now Kłodzko) and Dittersbach (now part of Wałbrzych), one of the most demanding railway lines in the former Prussian province of Silesia.[1] The route required numerous bridges, viaducts and tunnels in order to cross the terrain of the Sudetes.[1]

According to regional historical accounts, the viaduct was destroyed in May 1945, near the end of the Second World War, interrupting through traffic on the line.[1] A temporary wooden crossing was subsequently erected to restore rail operations, and a permanent replacement structure was completed in 1950.[1]

Description

The Leeden Viaduct is one of the notable bridge structures on the Kłodzko–Wałbrzych railway. Its present form reflects post-war reconstruction of the crossing after the destruction of the original viaduct in 1945.[1]
