Lawrenceville is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Illinois, United States,[3] located along the Embarras River. As of the 2020 census, Lawrenceville had a population of 4,164.[4] Lawrenceville is located in southeast Illinois, northwest of Vincennes, Indiana.

Geography

According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Lawrenceville has a total area of 2.16 square miles (5.59 km2), all land.[5]

Climate

According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Lawrenceville has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The hottest temperature recorded in Lawrenceville was 107 °F (41.7 °C) on June 29, 2012, while the coldest temperature recorded was −19 °F (−28.3 °C) on January 19, 1994.[6]

As of the 2020 census[9] there were 4,164 people, 1,898 households, and 1,156 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,924.21 inhabitants per square mile (742.94/km2). There were 2,071 housing units at an average density of 957.02 per square mile (369.51/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.55% White, 1.44% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 5.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.35% of the population.

There were 1,898 households, out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.94% were married couples living together, 11.85% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.09% were non-families. 31.35% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.01% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 2.23.

The city's age distribution consisted of 19.8% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 22% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $41,004, and the median income for a family was $43,100. Males had a median income of $32,226 versus $27,577 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,600. About 14.8% of families and 19.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 34.2% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
