Kozia Równia (Ziegenrücken) is a mountain in the Owl Mountains of south-western Poland, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. It reaches an elevation of 930 m (3,050 ft) above sea level and lies within the Owl Mountains Landscape Park.[1][2]

The mountain forms part of the main ridge of the Owl Mountains. It is a broad, flattened summit situated between Przełęcz Jugowska and Kozie Siodło, the latter separating it from Wielka Sowa.[2] In the official Polish register of geographical names, Kozia Równia is classified as a mountain peak.[1]

Topography

Kozia Równia is an extensive ridge-top summit in the central part of the Owl Mountains. From the mountain a side ridge branches off toward Grabina and Koziołki.[2]

Its north-eastern slope rises above the road running from Pieszyce and Kamionki through Przełęcz Jugowska toward Jugów and Nowa Ruda.[2]

Tourism

Kozia Równia lies on one of the principal hiking routes of the Owl Mountains. The Main Sudetic Trail passes by the summit area between Kozie Siodło and the junction known as Rozdroże pod Kozią Równią.[3]

On the slope below the summit there is a viewing terrace known as Taras pod Kozią Równią. According to the Lower Silesian PTTK trail portal, it was built in 2014 by the Stowarzyszenie Wielka Sowa and the Świdnica Forest District, and it offers views toward Kalenica and the town of Pieszyce.[4]

Another notable feature on the mountain is Niedźwiedzia Skała, a gneiss rock formation protected as a natural monument.[5]

Name

The present Polish name Kozia Równia is the official form used in the national register of geographical names.[1] The historical German name was Ziegenrücken.[6]

Historical references

The German name Ziegenrücken appears in pre-1945 guidebooks and regional publications relating to the Owl Mountains. A 1914 edition of Griebens Reiseführer lists an ascent route from Wüstegiersdorf “über den Prause-Berg und den Ziegenrücken”.[7] The name also occurs in interwar regional hiking literature connected with the Eulengebirge.[8]
