Karin Margareta Ahrland, née Andersson (20 July 1931 – 30 August 2019) was a Swedish politician, diplomat, lawyer, and activist. She was a member of the parliament of Sweden (Riksdag) from 1976 to 1989.[1] She served as the Minister of Health and Social Affairs from 22 May 1981 to 8 October 1982. From 1989 she served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first as a Consul General in Montreal, Canada from 1990 to 1993, and then as an Ambassador to Wellington, New Zealand from 1993 to 1995.

Early life

Ahrland was born on 20 July 1931 in Torshälla, Södermanland County, Sweden, the daughter of Valfrid Andersson, and his wife Greta (née Myhlén). She received a Candidate of Law degree from Lund University in 1958.[2]

Career

Ahrland completed his judicial clerkship from 1958 to 1961. In 1961, he served at the Helsingborg City Court (Helsingborgs rådhusrätt). From 1961 to 1964, he worked at the County Administrative Board of Malmöhus County. Between 1964 and 1968, he served as a law clerk at the Supreme Administrative Court of Sweden and as a legal secretary to the government. He was then appointed first legal secretary at the County Administrative Board of Kopparberg County, a position he held from 1968 to 1971.[2]

From 1971 to 1989, Ahrland served as first legal secretary and head of the Legal Department at the County Administrative Board of Malmöhus County. She was appointed ambassador at the Trade Department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1990, followed by service as consul general in Montreal from 1990 to 1993. She then served as ambassador in Wellington from 1993 to 1995, with concurrent accreditation to Apia, Avarua, Nukuʻalofa, and Suva. From 1996 to 2001, she served as Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps (Introduktör av främmande sändebud).[2]

She was a member of the Swedish Council for Building Research, and the chairman of the Swedish Arts Council. From 1970 to 1976, she was a co-editor of the women's magazine Hertha and the chairman of the Fredrika Bremer Association.[3][4]

Personal life

In 1958, she married the professor of political science Hans Fredrik Petersson. They divorced in 1962.[3] In 1964, she married Defence Director Nils Harald Ahrland, the son of Harald Ahrland and Märtha (née Ljunggren).[2][3]

Death

Ahrland died on 30 August 2019 in Brösarp, Sweden.[3] The funeral service took place on 27 September 2019 in Trons Chapel (Trons kapell) in Limhamn.[5] She was interred on 30 October 2019 in the memorial grove at the Old Cemetery in Malmö.[6]
