Early life and background

Malhotra was born in New Delhi, India.[4] He attended The Air Force School and Delhi Public School, Dwarka, where he was active in academics, sports and co-curricular activities, and also participated in Model United Nations programmes.[4] He later pursued a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree, beginning his studies at Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi, before completing his education at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia.[2] His mother worked as a history teacher before managing a medical centre in Melbourne, while his father is associated with the transport industry.[4] He has one younger sibling.[4]

Career

Malhotra began his career by assisting filmmaker and producer Mitu Bhowmick Lange at Mind Blowing Films and working with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, before training in theatre and transitioning to acting roles. [4]

He trained under Arjun Raina. He further went on to perform for The Australian Shakespeare Company, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Short n Sweet Theatre Festival.[4]

He made his first on-screen appearance in a Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk commercial directed by Vinnil Mathew.[4]

He made his acting debut in the Netflix original sports-drama series Selection Day. Produced by Anil Kapoor, he portrayed the role of Javed Ansari.[7] The series was released in two parts and he was termed the “dark horse” of the show.[8]

He subsequently appeared in the Amazon Prime Video series The Forgotten Army - Azaadi Ke Liye directed by Kabir Khan and the Netflix exclusive film What Are the Odds directed by Megha Ramaswamy.[9][10] The film was produced by the International Emmy Awards winners for Delhi Crime, FilmKaravan.[11] His performance in the film was one of the key highlights in the coming of age story about two high school kids.[12] [13]

He further went on to star in Rohit Shetty’s magnum opus show for Amazon Prime Video called Indian Police Force as Sikku.[3] [14]

In 2025, he was the lead in Excel Entertainment’s ambitious supernatural thriller series Andhera, in which his portrayal as Jay Sheth received positive attention.[15][16] [17] The Times of India reviewed his performance as “Karanvir Malhotra convincingly captures Jay’s dual state of guilt over his brother’s condition and bewilderment at his surreal experiences”. [18]

He will next feature in his first theatrical film among an ensemble led by Shah Rukh Khan in Siddharth Anand’s action thriller film King.[19]
