Kaplan Station
Kaplan Station (Hebrew: תחנת קפלן, Tahanat Kaplan) is a future underground light rail station on the Green Line of the Tel Aviv Light Rail. It is located in central Tel Aviv, Israel, beneath the Ibn Gabirol Street corridor.[1]
The station is situated at a strategic cultural and commercial junction, serving the Sarona complex, the HaKirya military headquarters, and the cultural institutions surrounding Habima Square. It is currently under construction and is expected to open alongside the rest of the Green Line (estimated 2028).
Location and access
The station is located underground beneath Ibn Gabirol Street, just south of its intersection with Kaplan Street. It lies between the Carlebach interchange station (to the south) and the Rabin Square station (to the north).
The station is designed with three primary surface entrances:
- Northern Entrance: At the junction of Kaplan Street and Ibn Gabirol Street, adjacent to Yakin Tower.
- Southern Entrance: At the junction of Laskov, Carlebach, and Ibn Gabirol streets.
- Western Entrance: Located on Toscanini Street, providing access to the residential areas and the Tel Aviv Cinematheque.
Design and layout
Kaplan Station is one of only four underground stations on the Green Line (along with Carlebach, Rabin Square and Arlozorov West).[2]
The station box is approximately 22 meters wide and 200 meters long, with a depth of roughly 30 meters. Like other underground stations in the network, it will feature a mezzanine level for ticketing and validation, leading down to a central island platform where trains will board on either side.
Construction history
The station was approved as part of the Green Line's central segment (Taba 71/B), which routes the line underground through the dense city center to minimize surface disruption.
Preparatory infrastructure work (utilities relocation) began in late 2020.
Major construction commenced in 2022, with traffic diversions implemented on Ibn Gabirol Street to allow for the diaphragm wall construction.
In November 2025, the Tel Aviv local planning and construction committee approved the expropriation of a land strip along facade of Yachin House, a building overlooking the station, with the land comprising approximately 533 square meters.[3] The purpose of this expropriation was to widen Kaplan Street and to make way for the station.
Service
Upon completion, the station will serve the Green Line, which connects the southern cities of Holon and Rishon LeZion to the northern commercial zones of Herzliya.
While Kaplan Station does not have a direct in-station transfer to the Red Line, it is located within short walking distance of the Red Line's Yehudit Station (to the east) and is one stop away from the Carlebach Station, which serves as the primary transfer hub between the Green and Red lines.
Nearby landmarks
The station serves one of Tel Aviv's busiest mixed-use districts:
- Sarona and its Market: A major culinary and retail complex located in a restored Templer colony.
- HaKirya: The headquarters of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Ministry of Defense.
- Tel Aviv Cinematheque: A key cultural hub located on HaArba'a Street.
- Habima Square: Although closer to the future Dizengoff station, the southern end of the square (Charles Bronfman Auditorium) is accessible from Kaplan.
- London Ministore: A well-known commercial arcade and theater complex on Ibn Gabirol.
