Kanke is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Kwal.

It has an area of 926 km2 and a population of 121,424 at the 2006 census. The majority of the population are Angas - 95% - with the remaining 5% being Taroh, Borghum, and Siyawa. Nigeria's former president, Yakubu Gowon, is from the Kanke LGA.

The postal code of the area is 933.

[1]kanke is also the ancestral land of the Ngas people. Which first settled there before spreading to various places such as Pankshin and Tapshin in Bauchi state.

People

With a population of 121,424 at the 2006 census. The Ngas dominate the local government, with other tribes such as Tarok, Siyawa, and Borghum. Kanke has 4 districts .

Ampang East, Amper, Garram and Kabwir. The LGA is is partly occupied by hills with the people of Ampang living in the hill sides most. While those at Kabwir, Amper and Garram reside in the vast plains of the LGA. With some villages the above districs also located on small hills.

This mountainous regions are said to have saved the people from many raids. keeping the people save and unconquered.

The local government is known for its famous dawaki market. Nigeria's biggest dog selling market. Located in Dawaki town.

The LGA also holds two major markets the Amper market located in Amper town which holds on Saturdays weekly, and the dawaki market which holds on Thursday.

And also a seasonal tomato market located in Lepgor Ampang east.

It is known for its widely consumption of Dog meat and burkutu(brewed Guinea corn) .

Agriculture.

Majority of people living in this local government area are farmers. Crops grown are: Guinea corn, Millet, sorghum. perishable such as tomatoes and onions are also cultivated in large amounts.

Being a rocky and fertile land, the teraccing farming system is often used in the area. Important trees such as African black olives, (atili) or as it's called in Ngas(pet), which is consumed and also used for it's oil is an essential fruit to Ngas people. Other trees such as Boabab tree and the locust beans tree are also found in large amount. Cultivated for their fruits and many other traditional purposes.

The local government also holds several festivals such as the Mostar Festival, Moslun festival, Arkhem, Pang-nkun, mosbwir and many others.
