Jill Wruble

Jill Wruble is a board-certified, fellowship-trained diagnostic radiologist who currently serves as Chief of Ultrasound Services[1] and Associate Director of the Radiology Residency Program[2] at UConn John Dempsey Hospital. She is founder of GlobalRadZambia and a fellow at Johns Hopkins Medicine[3] as well as an expert speaker on overdiagnosis due to incidental imaging finding in United States medicine.[4][5]

Biography

Wruble earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (1983–1987) and her Bachelor of Arts from Williams College (1979–1983). Wruble’s academic career includes long-standing faculty appointments across major institutions, including Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Connecticut (July 2005–July 2023), Yale University (July 2006–June 2021), the University of Minnesota (July 1999–June 2003), and Georgetown University (July 1995–June 1999). Throughout these roles, she has demonstrated a sustained commitment to teaching, mentoring residents, advancing evidence-based imaging practices, and supporting community healthcare.[6]

Professional Experience

Wruble's professional experience extends across academic medicine, military service, and private practice. She served as a Staff Radiologist at the West Haven VA Medical Center [7](January 2005–December 2019) and continues to practice teleradiology with Virtual Radiologic Consultants (January 2021–Present). Earlier in her career, she served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps (1988–2005), including as a General Medical Officer at the 43rd MASH in South Korea (July 1988–June 1989). Her training includes a Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1989–1993) and fellowships at Georgetown University Hospital (1994–1995) and later Johns Hopkins (2020–2021).

Award-winning Educator

Wruble was named Teacher of the Year by the American Osteopathic College of Radiology (2023) and received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the New York Institute of Technology in 2025, where she also delivered the commencement keynote[8]. The full commencement keynote is available here.

Her teaching philosophy emphasizes clinical reasoning, decision-making, and professional judgment, consistently earning exceptional evaluations from trainees and contributing to the development of future leaders in radiology. Within UConn Health, Wruble is frequently called upon as an expert resource. In May 2025, within UConn School of Medicine’s Health Systems Sciences faculty, Wruble delivered a seminar for medical students on incidental imaging findings, diagnostic stewardship, and overdiagnosis. In April 2025, Wruble presented to the Urology Grand Rounds on the topic of MRI-based prostate cancer risk stratification, integrating emerging clinical trial evidence, imaging practice standards, and multidisciplinary decision-making throughout the lecture. In 2024, Wruble served as course faculty and co-organizer for Imaging for Diagnosis and Preoperative Planning of Gynecologic Conditions, delivering two core lectures and leading the case review and simulation curriculum.[9]

Wruble’s experience as a research mentor and co-investigator to UConn radiology residents has directly contributed to notable medical advancements. In November 2023, UConn Radiology resident and mentee, Paola Tabaro Pico, MD, presented to the National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute on breast density and cancer risk assessment, a presentation cited in her successful fellowship application to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In April 2024, mentee Dr. Sarah La Pierre presented to the NIH/NCI on prostate MRI for cancer risk stratification.

In 2023, Wruble led the successful submission for UConn’s ultrasound accreditation through the American College of Radiology (ACR)[10]. This accreditation is widely recognized as the national gold standard.

Leadership of International Education Programs

Wruble has led a number of innovative educational programs that have measurably expanded the radiology workforce in underserved settings, most notably, the GlobalRadZambia [11]radiology residency program in Zambia[12]. GlobalRadZambia is an international radiology training program launched in 2021 to address the lack of formal postgraduate radiology education in Zambia[13].

GlobalMedEd features longitudinal mentorship, interactive case-based teaching, and coordinated faculty engagement. In its first four years, the program has graduated four classes totaling sixteen radiologists, increasing the number of practicing radiologists in Zambia from seven in 2019 (for a population of nineteen million) to twenty-three in 2026.

Graduates of GlobalRadZambia have adopted teaching and leadership roles in other provinces, and as a result, are now training the next generation of radiologists. The program has grown to include trainees from Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Namibia, demonstrating the program’s scalability and potential for international growth. The success of GlobalRadZambia established a replicable educational model and it is currently being applied to the development of Sierra Leone’s first radiology training program.

Prior to establishing GRADZ, Wruble served as Associate Program Director for an international radiology residency at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi, Tanzania, where she taught and mentored residents over two years and developed a structured didactic curriculum[14].

Radiology Leadership Roles

Dr. Wruble’s contributions to radiology extend to national leadership and scholarship. She has served on the National Cancer Institute Cancer Screening and Prevention Board (2016–Present) and held leadership roles including Chair of the Radiology Council at the Lown Institute (2016–2021). She is also an examiner for the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology and a peer reviewer for leading journals. Her academic work includes peer-reviewed publications and invited lectures, as well as nationally recognized presentations, including TEDx talks on evidence-based imaging and cancer screening[15].

Advancing Rural Family Medicine in the Mississauga Delta Region

Ruble developed and operationalized a three-year ultrasound and diagnostic imaging curriculum for the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) at Arkansas State University Rural Family Medicine Residency[16]. This program aligns with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and was designed specifically for the underserved Mississippi Delta region.

TEDx University of Pennsylvania (2015): “Incidentalomas: What they are and why we should be concerned”

In this widely-viewed TEDx talk, Wruble delivered a compelling presentation that crystallized a pervasive challenge in radiology (the management of incidental findings) and helped catalyze a field-wide movement toward standardized approaches. The talk translated a complex, clinically nuanced topic into accessible, actionable insights for clinicians, patients, and health systems. It raised general awareness of the unintended consequences of incidental findings and directly influenced the development and publication of consensus white papers and best-practice guidelines. By shaping discourse beyond radiology and engaging multidisciplinary stakeholders, the talk advanced both patient-centered care and systematic improvement in imaging interpretation and follow-up. The full talk is available here.

TEDx West Point (2019): “The Myth of Early Detection of Cancer”

Delivered at TEDx West Point, this talk clarified difficult concepts in cancer screening, including false positives, lead-time bias, and length-time bias, and reframed long-standing assumptions about early detection. By translating complex epidemiologic and decision-science principles into accessible language, Wruble's presentation helped advance clinician and public understanding of the nuances and limitations of screening tests, moving the conversation beyond simplistic “early is always better” narratives. This talk contributed to heightened awareness among medical professionals and patients of unintended consequences in screening pathways and reinforced the need for evidence-based, personalized decision making in cancer care. The full talk is available here.
