Jeff Webb (January 19, 1950 – March 19, 2026) was an American businessman and executive who was primarily focused on the development of cheerleading. He was the founder of the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) and Varsity Spirit, along with its parent, Varsity Brands. Webb was the founder and president of the International Cheer Union (ICU), the world governing body of the sport of cheerleading, as well as founder and chairman of The New American Populist.[1]

Webb was a publisher and senior news editor of Human Events.

Early life and education

Webb was born in Dallas, Texas, on January 19, 1950.[2][3] He attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a yell leader for the school's cheer squad.[4] During college, Webb worked for the National Cheerleaders Association, which was founded by Lawrence Herkimer.[5][6] He planned to go to law school but instead accepted an offer to work at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA), which launched his business career.[7]

Career

In 1971, Webb began working full-time for Lawrence Herkimer's NCA. In 1974, he founded the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) and Varsity Spirit. He purchased the NCA after Herkimer retired.[5][6] Like the NCA, the UCA began as a series of training camps and clinics for high school and college cheerleaders that eventually added cheerleading competitions.[5] Varsity Fashions is a cheer apparel and accessory brand.[8]

In 2012, Varsity merged with Herff Jones, an Indianapolis company that produces items like graduation apparel and class rings. Webb served as president and CEO of the company effective July 1, 2013. Webb's company had already become known as Varsity Brands. Along with Herff Jones, the company also oversees BSN Sports (which it acquired in 2013), Varsity Spirit, the UCA, and the NCA.[5][6][9][10]

In 2014, Webb became the Chairman of Herff Jones.[10] In 2016, he stepped down as CEO of Varsity Brands. Bain Capital Private Equity bought Varsity Brands for $2.8 billion in 2018. Varsity Brands' annual revenues exceed $1.8 billion, according to the company. It has more than 8,000 full-time employees.[7] On December 31, 2020, he stepped down as chairman of Varsity to focus on international expansion of cheerleading through the ICU, but still provided consultative services to Varsity. [11]

Webb is often credited with modernizing cheerleading by making it more competitive, bringing it to the mainstream audience with partnerships with ESPN, favoring more acrobatics and athleticism, and creating new outfit designs, among other things.[12][5] He was the founder and president of the International Cheer Union, the world governing body of the sport of cheerleading.[13][14]

He is recognized as one of the leaders in the sport who pushed for international recognition, including adding it as an Olympic sport,[15] even though he testified in 2010, that he never imagined that his competitions would establish a new sport; rather, he understood them as a publicity vehicle for his startup business.[16] Webb has been criticized due to the monopolistic behavior of Varsity in the cheerleading space.[17][18]

In December 2020, Webb stepped down from Varsity. He was subsequently named the new co-publisher and senior news editor of the conservative publication Human Events.[19][20]

Death

Webb died from a head injury he suffered in a fall while playing pickleball in Memphis on March 19, 2026, at the age of 76.[3][21][22]
