Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) is an autonomous entrepreneurship development institute located in Guwahati, Assam, India. Established in 1993, the institute works to promote entrepreneurship, skill development, research, and consultancy in the field of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of the Government of India and plays a key role in strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the North Eastern Region of India.[1][2]
The institute conducts entrepreneurship development programmes, startup incubation initiatives, skill training, and research activities aimed at fostering innovation and employment generation.[3]
History
The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship was established in 1993 by the Government of India to promote entrepreneurship and enterprise development, particularly in the northeastern states.[1]
The institute started its operations in 1994 in Guwahati and soon became a major training and research centre for entrepreneurship development in the region.[3]
Initially operating under the Ministry of Industry, the institute was later brought under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in 2015 as part of the Government of India's efforts to integrate entrepreneurship development with national skill development initiatives.[1]
Campus
The campus of the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship is located at Lalmati in the Basistha Chariali area of Guwahati. The institute's campus includes academic buildings, training halls, conference facilities, incubation spaces, and administrative offices designed to support entrepreneurship training and research activities.[1]
The campus also houses hostel facilities for participants attending training programmes, seminar halls for workshops and conferences, and digital infrastructure supporting entrepreneurship education and incubation services.[3]
In addition to training infrastructure, the institute maintains incubation and mentoring facilities that provide guidance to startups and small enterprises in areas such as business planning, financial management, and market access.[2]
Organisation
The institute operates as an autonomous organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. It is governed by a council consisting of representatives from government ministries, financial institutions, industry bodies, and academic organisations.[1]
The governing structure allows the institute to collaborate with national and international organisations to implement entrepreneurship and skill development programmes.[3]
Initiatives and programs
The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship has implemented several major government programmes aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and employment generation.
Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP)
IIE serves as a national resource organisation for the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP), a rural entrepreneurship initiative under the Ministry of Rural Development. The programme promotes enterprise development in rural areas by providing training, mentoring, and financial access to rural entrepreneurs.[4]
Skill development programmes
The institute conducts skill development and entrepreneurship training programmes under various national initiatives aimed at youth employment and self-employment. These programmes focus on entrepreneurship awareness, enterprise management, and startup development.[3]
Startup promotion initiatives
IIE supports entrepreneurship promotion through incubation programmes, mentoring networks, and startup ecosystem development initiatives in collaboration with educational institutions and government agencies.[2]
The institute undertakes projects and training programmes across India, with a particular focus on the northeastern states. The institute has implemented cluster development programmes and entrepreneurship projects in sectors such as handicrafts, food processing, rural enterprises, and micro-manufacturing.[1] It also collaborates with state governments and development agencies to strengthen local entrepreneurship ecosystems and support micro and small enterprises.[3]
Collaborations
The institute collaborates with universities, research organisations, and development institutions to promote entrepreneurship education and startup incubation.
In 2022, the institute signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Institute of Management Shillong to promote entrepreneurship development and startup incubation in the northeastern region.[5]
The institute has also partnered with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati for entrepreneurship development and innovation initiatives.[6]
Recognition
The institute has received recognition for its contribution to entrepreneurship promotion and skill development. In 2023 it received an Award of Excellence for its initiatives in entrepreneurship development and training.[7]
