Hunter McIntyre (athlete)

Hunter McIntyre (born 1989) is an American professional athlete, fitness competitor, and television personality. He is best known as a three-time Hyrox World Champion and has been recognized as one of the dominant figures in the sport of fitness racing.[1] He holds the men's pro Hyrox world record with a time of 53:22.[2]

Early life

McIntyre grew up on the East Coast of the United States, splitting time between New York City and New England.[3] He developed an early interest in outdoor activities and athletics. He later relocated to California, where he currently resides between Malibu and Crestline in the San Bernardino Mountains.[3]

Career

Obstacle course racing

McIntyre initially rose to prominence in obstacle course racing (OCR), where he won six OCR World Championship titles and four national championships.[3] He also competed in and won multiple Tough Mudder X events, establishing himself as one of the top athletes in the OCR circuit.

Television appearances

McIntyre gained broader public attention through his television career. He was the undefeated champion of Steve Austin's Broken Skull Challenge on CMT, winning three consecutive appearances.[1] In 2019, he appeared as a "Defender" on Million Dollar Mile, a CBS reality competition series produced by LeBron James's SpringHill Entertainment.[4]

McIntyre was named one of the 50 Fittest Athletes by Sports Illustrated.[3]

Hyrox career

McIntyre transitioned to Hyrox competition, where he quickly became the sport's most prominent male athlete. He has won three Hyrox World Championship titles and set the men's pro division world record with a time of 53 minutes and 22 seconds.[1] His dominance in the sport earned him the nickname "The Sheriff".[3]

In competitive Hyrox, McIntyre has participated in over 35 professional races across seven seasons, maintaining a consistently high level of performance.[5]

Murph Challenge world record

In 2020, McIntyre set the Murph Challenge world record, a grueling workout named after Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy. His record-setting effort also raised over 0,000 for charity.[3][1]

Training philosophy

McIntyre is known for his periodization-based approach to training, alternating between dedicated endurance blocks and strength blocks. He trains at his cabin in Big Bear, California, using a mix of conventional gym work and unconventional methods including log chopping, stone lifting, and tire flipping.[1] He also trains in Boulder, Colorado, utilizing the mountainous terrain for endurance work. He has described his weekly training as typically involving six hours of gym work and 10 to 14 hours of cardio during peak preparation.[1]

Personal life

McIntyre runs the HAOS Training program and hosts a podcast. He stands 6 feet 2 inches (188 cm) tall.[3]
