Hamsa (Hebrew: חמסה) was an Israeli musical quintet. The group was formed in 2001 by music producers Eyal Buchbut and Dror Margalit. The group got a breakthrough in the spring of 2003 with the single Chayav lamoot alai, followed by their debut album Hamsa, and shortly after disbanded, during 2004. They reunited in 2024 to compete in the eleventh season of HaKokhav HaBa.[1]
History
The girl group consisted of Esther Eti Castro, Pazit Herman, Carmi Shimron, Yasmin Suissa and Naama Etel. They began their journey in 2000 in the auditions held for the Eurovision Song Contest, and in 2001 they came in third place in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Darbuka".[2]
Two years later, with the song "Darbuka", the band released their debut album, which was named after the band, Hamsa.[3] The album was relatively commercially successful and sold over 15,000 copies in Israel. The single "Hayf Lemot A'li" (I Must Die for Me), released in January 2003, achieved success when it appeared at number one on the Reshet C chart for a week, and was even ranked number seven on their end-of-year chart. The song's music video was published on YouTube by Hed Artzi in June 2011, and achieved considerable success with nearly a million views, even though it was released.[4]
On May 31, 2004, news broke in the press that the band was breaking up. In July of that year, Eyal Bohbot and Dror Margalit, who had conceived the idea of creating the girl quintet "Hamsa", announced that they were recruiting new girls to be part of the new Hamsa band, an idea that was quickly abandoned due to lack of.[5]
In July 2020, the band members announced the reunion and re-establishment of the band, without Karmi Shimron and Yasmin Suissa (a new singer, Sivan Ganon, was recruited in their place, after auditions for 30 contestants), with the help of the band's producer and agent Roberto Ben-Shoshan.[6] On August 2, she released the single "Inti Hayati", written by Moran David and Hadas Cohen, and also included a music video.[7]
