The Grittis were a Venetian patrician family, listed among the so-called New Houses. In the first half of the 16th century it gave the Republic a doge, Andrea Gritti.
History
Historically, it is not certain whether this family descended from the first inhabitants of the Venetian lagoon or whether it came from the island of Crete[2]; according to legend, however, the Gritti took refuge in Venice from Altino at the time of the invasion of the Huns[3], and were included in the patrician class from the early years of the Republic, to which they would have given ancient tribunes.[4]
In 1720, a branch of the family was invested by the Venetian Government with the title of count , guaranteed to all male and female descendants, on the fiefdom of Zumelle (in the Belluno area), with major and minor criminal jurisdiction and cum potestate gladii. At the fall of the Republic of Venice, the Gritti family was divided into seven different branches.[4] By Sovereign Resolution of 8 October 1818, the Gritti family was confirmed as noble by the government of Vienna; on 13 December 1819, however, its members were granted the dignity and title of counts of the Austrian Empire.[3] Further branches of this house received confirmation of nobility by Sovereign Resolutions dated 16 and 30 November 1817 and 10 January 1818.[3]
