Gerardus Oorthuys

Gerardus Oorthuys (1742 - August 23, 1812)[1] was a Dutch captain, who participated in the Action of 30 May 1781, in which he commanded one of the two Dutch frigates fighting two British Frigates. In the battle, he was forced to retreat by HMS Flora after compelling HMS Crescent to surrender but was unable to take possession of the Crescent.[2] After the battle, Oorthuys was compared to earlier Dutch naval commanders such as Michiel de Ruyter and Maarten Tromp.

He was born in Groningen, the Netherlands,[3] and was married to Elisabeth Rebecca Rijfsnijder (1763–1811).
