The Gan Israel Camping Network a.k.a. Camp Gan Israel (Hebrew: גַּן יִשְׂרָאֵל, lit. 'Garden of Israel') is a network of Chabad-Lubavitch summer camps. CGI claims a total enrolment of over 100,000 children across several hundred camps.[1]

History

The first Chabad-affiliated summer camp was a girls' overnight camp, Camp Emunah, in Greenfield Park, New York (where it still located), founded in 1953 by Rabbi Jacob J. Hecht. In 1956, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, directed some young men by the name of Rabbi Moshe Lazar, Rabbi Yossi Weinbaum And Rabbi Shemtov to open a parallel boys' overnight camp under the auspices of the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch organization.[2][3] The young men chose the name Gan Yisroel ("Garden of Israel") for this camp and went to the Rebbe for approval, after the founder of Chassidism, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov. Camp Gan Israel moved to its current location in Parksville, New York in 1969.

Rabbi Schneerson visited both of these camps in 1956 (before the camp season began), 1957 and 1960 (during the camp season).[4] Since the early 1990s, the Rebbe's visits have formed an important part of the oral history of Camp Gan Israel in Parksville and all camps in the network, and are frequently referred to in song and in print.[5][6]

Other branches of Gan Israel overnight camps were founded near Montreal (1958, in Labelle, Quebec), London (c. 1960), Detroit (1961, in Kalkaska Township, Michigan), Melbourne (1960s), Florida (2007), Kfar Tzvi Sitrin (2004), Toronto (2012), and others. In addition, several hundred Gan Israel day camps exist around the world.

Israel

Gan Yisroel Eretz HaKodesh

In Israel, Gan Yisroel Eretz HaKodesh is large camp network. It was founded in 2004 by Rabbi Chaim Kaplan under the Agudat Kiryat Chabad Tzfat Association. It hosts 1,500 campers each summer, across its boys camp, girls camp, and summer yeshiva camp.[7] The camp is military toned, campers are referred to as soldiers, they line up for a daily morning parade, they recite The 12 Pesukim, and declare "We want moshiach now".[8][9] It is associated with the Panasaim organization.

Reshet Machanot HaKayitz Gan YisRoel B'Eretz HaKodesh

Reshet Machanot HaKayitz Gan YisRoel B'Eretz HaKodesh is a central body established in an attempt to unite all Chabad summer camps in the Israel, under the organization of Tzivos Hashem BeEretz HaKodesh, headed by Rabbi David Nachshon. The network is affiliated with Meshichist Chabad.[10][11][12]
