Gabbro Quarry Słupiec (Polish: Kopalnia Gabra „Słupiec”) is a gabbro quarry in Słupiec, today a district of Nowa Ruda in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland. The quarry is operated by Kopalnie Surowców Skalnych Bartnica and produces crushed gabbro used mainly as aggregate for road construction and asphalt.[1]

Geography

The quarry is located near Nowa Ruda in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The hill being quarried was historically known in German as the Hutberg. According to the historical Messtischblatt map sheet TK25 5465 "Neurode" from 1934, the mountain originally reached a height of about 618 m above sea level. The surrounding forest area was known as the Steiner Wald (“stony forest”).[2]

Geology

The quarry exploits deposits of gabbro, a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock. The deposit forms part of the Nowa Ruda–Słupiec gabbro-diabase massif in the Sudetes.[3] Gabbro from the quarry is processed into crushed stone and aggregates used in road construction, railway ballast and asphalt production.[4][5]

Transport

The quarry is connected by rail to the Polish railway network via a surviving section of the former Eulengebirgsbahn from Ścinawka Średnia. This approximately 6.7 km long branch line runs via Nowa Ruda Słupiec to the quarry and is primarily used for transporting aggregate from the site.[6]

History

The quarry already existed in 1883. Messtischblatt map sheet TK25 5465 "Neurode" from 1883 already shows a quarry.[7] Messtischblatt map sheet TK25 5465 "Neurode" from 1934 also shows a quarry at the site of the present operation namend "Gabbrowerk".[8]

According to the operator, the quarry in Słupiec was opened in 1945. In 1994 the site became part of Kopalnie Surowców Skalnych w Bartnicy, after which the quarry and its processing plant were modernised and equipped with new crushing and processing machinery.[9]

The quarry produces gabbro which is processed into aggregates for use mainly in road construction and asphalt production.[10]
