"Everytime You Cry" is a song by the British rock band The Outfield. It was released in 1986 as the fourth and final single from their debut studio album, Play Deep. Written by guitarist John Spinks and produced by William Wittman, the song became one of the group's most recognizable tracks in the United States. The single featured a song titled "Tiny Lights", a song that isn't part of any of their albums.
Composition
"Everytime You Cry" is written by John Spinks and features the band's signature blend of bright guitar tones, melodic hooks and tight vocal harmonies. The lyrics depict emotional distance and longing in a strained relationship, a recurring theme in the Outfield's early material.
Chart performance
"Everytime You Cry" received moderate radio airplay in North America. It first entered the Billboard Hot 100 on 20 September 1986, debuting at number 85.[1] It peaked at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 20 on the Album Rock Tracks chart in 1986.[2]
Music video
A music video was directed by David Fincher to accompany the single, featuring the band performing in a dimly lit concert at night.[3]
