Ethiopia Planum is a mountain on Io, a moon of Jupiter. The mountain was named after Ethiopia, where, in Greek mythology, Io, a lover of Zeus, passed by in her wanderings. The name "Ethiopia Planum" was officially approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1985.[1]

Geology and characteristics

Its coordinates are 45°29′S 24°27′W / 45.48°S 24.45°W / -45.48; -24.45,[2][3] and is located near Tarsus Regio.[3] Ethiopia Planum has a diameter of 331.32 kilometres (205.87 mi) and is 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) high.[1]
