Enrico Bertini
Enrico Bertini is an Italian computer scientist and associate professor at Northeastern University, where he holds a joint appointment in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the College of Arts, Media and Design. His research is in data visualization and visual analytics. He is a co-founder of Data Stories, a podcast on data visualization.
Education
Bertini completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in computer science in Rome, Italy. He earned a PhD in Computer Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome (Italian: Università di Roma La Sapienza) in 2006.[1] His doctoral research was conducted within the field of information visualization, with a focus on techniques for exploring and evaluating large and high-dimensional datasets.[2] Sapienza University of Rome is one of the oldest universities in Europe and a major center for engineering and computer science research in Italy.
Career
After completing his doctorate, Bertini worked as a research scientist at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and the University of Konstanz in Germany between 2006 and 2012.[3] At the University of Konstanz, he collaborated with researchers in the area of visual analytics and high-dimensional data under the supervision of professor Daniel Keim, a researcher in that field.[4]
In 2012, he joined the NYU Tandon School of Engineering as an assistant professor.[4] He was promoted to associate professor in 2018.[3] In 2022, he joined Northeastern University in Boston, where he holds a joint appointment between the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the College of Arts, Media and Design.[3]
His research covers the design and evaluation of data visualization systems, the study of how people extract information from visual representations, and the use of visual interfaces for exploring and interpreting machine learning models.[3][4] Application areas in which this research has been applied include healthcare, cybersecurity, climate science, and human rights.[4]
Bertini is a co-founder and co-host of Data Stories, a podcast on data visualization co-produced with designer Moritz Stefaner. The podcast ran from 2012 to 2023 and produced 170 episodes, accumulating over 2.7 million downloads.[5] The show featured guests from data visualization, statistics, and related fields.[6]
Bertini is one of the founders of the BELIV workshop series on evaluation methods in visualization, held in conjunction with the IEEE VIS conference.[4] He has served on the organizing and program committees of IEEE VIS.[4]
Research
Bertini's research has addressed quality metrics in high-dimensional data visualization,[7] the persuasive and deceptive potential of visual representations of data,[8] and the use of visualization to interpret machine learning models. His group has also worked on visual interfaces for explainable AI and the cognitive affordances of visual representations.
His publications have appeared in IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Computer Graphics Forum, and the proceedings of the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, among other peer-reviewed venues. Several papers co-authored by Bertini received Best Paper Honorable Mention awards at CHI.[9] As of 2025, his work has received over 8,000 citations according to Google Scholar.[10]
