The Dzietrzychów Viaduct is a railway viaduct in Dzietrzychów, now part of Wałbrzych, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of south-western Poland. It carries the Kłodzko Główne–Wałbrzych Główny railway over ul. Niepodległości and a deep valley in the Podgórze area of the city.[1]

Historically, the structure was known in German as the Viadukt Dittersbach.[2]

History

The viaduct was built in 1879–1880 during construction of the railway between Kłodzko and Wałbrzych through the Sudetes.[3][4] According to local historical descriptions, the masonry supports were prepared for double-track operation from the outset, but the bridge initially carried only the southern set of iron truss girders. Additional steel girders were added in 1910 when the line was expanded for two-track working.[1][5]

The viaduct was regarded as a strategically important structure. Local archival material summarized by polska-org.pl states that, because of the large span lengths and the height of the supports, mining was not carried out in its protective pillar before 1945.[1]

Description

The bridge is a three-span truss structure with an overall length of 120 m (390 ft), each span measuring about 40 m (130 ft).[3][6] Its height is about 20 m (66 ft).[3] The present bridge still retains six truss girders, but only the northern side carries the current track.[1]

The viaduct stands at about kilometre 50.517 of line 286 and is one of the notable nineteenth-century engineering structures on the route approaching Wałbrzych from the south-east.[1]
