Drogosław (Nowa Ruda)

Drogosław is a district of the town of Nowa Ruda in Kłodzko County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland.[1] It lies on the northern side of Nowa Ruda, in the valley of the Włodzica River, along the route toward Wałbrzych.[2]

History

The settlement was historically known by its German name, Kunzendorf.[3] It was first mentioned in 1352 as Cunczendorf.[4] For centuries it formed part of the historical region of the Kłodzko Land.[5]

A manor estate connected with the Stillfried family was established there in the early modern period.[6] The surviving manor in Drogosław dates to the first half of the 17th century and was rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries.[7][8]

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Drogosław developed under the influence of coal mining in the Nowa Ruda area.[9] Before 1945 it was an independent village.[10] After the Second World War, when the area became part of Poland, the settlement received the Polish name Drogosław.[11] In 1954, it was incorporated into Nowa Ruda.[12]

Landmarks

One of the district's principal monuments is the Church of Saint Barbara (Kościół św. Barbary).[13] The church was built in 1910–1911 and is noted for its historicist architecture, with predominately Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Baroque forms; it also features a westwork tower façade.[14][15]

Another important site is the Stillfried Manor in Drogosław, an early modern masonry manor house later rebuilt in subsequent centuries and originally associated with a farm complex and park.[16][17]

Contemporary character

Today, Drogosław functions mainly as a residential part of Nowa Ruda while retaining a distinct local identity within the town.[18]
