Dingwen Academy Hangzhou (DWA, Chinese: 杭州鼎文学校; pinyin: Hángzhōu Dǐngwén Xuéxiào) is a private, coeducational, bilingual international Pre-K–12 day and boarding school in the Qiantang District of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. It opened in September 2024[1] and in 2025 was authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Diploma Programme.[2]
Local and provincial media have profiled the campus and programs. In November 2025, Hangzhou Daily reported that the school's eco‑innovation center was one of two Hangzhou cases presented at the United Nations China Youth Environment Forum in Hong Kong.[5][6][7]
The campus is located in Qiantang's University Town North area, a core zone within the “Qiantang Science City” strategy, which municipal planners describe as upgrading education, research, and urban services around the university cluster.[8] University Town North and the school are included in the district's "Qiantang Youxue" (钱塘优学) initiative to improve education quality and promote internationalization.[9]
History
District authorities announced the through‑train Pre-K–12 campus in April 2024, noting a September opening.[1] On March 31, 2024, Hangzhou.com reported a parent information day describing academic plans and facilities.[10]
On April 29, 2024, the provincial outlet Zhejiang Online noted that the first high‑school intake consisted of two classes totaling 48 students.[11] In May 2024, the campus hosted the World Scholar's Cup Hangzhou Round.[12]
Campus and facilities
The school site occupies about 400 mu (approximately 26.7 ha; 66 acres), with around 183,000 m2 of built floor area.[3] It has more than 300 students enrolled across its K–12 program.[4]
Local coverage describes a riverside campus with ecological features—including a farm, wetlands, and an herb garden—alongside specialized sports and arts venues.[5][10] In 2024, district and municipal reporting listed the campus on Zhejiang's “sponge-city” demonstration backup list.[13]
School pages describe indoor facilities including a swimming pool, squash and basketball halls, performing arts spaces, and landscaped outdoor areas.[14] Local reporting notes that the pool is a 50‑meter, eight‑lane competition‑standard facility.[10]
Residences and boarding
The school states that boarding is available from primary through high school. Dormitories number about 450 rooms with approximately 1,800 beds; the stated total capacity is about 2,500 students, with boarding available for roughly 70% of students.[15][3]
Academics
According to the school, in the compulsory‑education years (primary and junior secondary), it follows China's compulsory education curriculum. In the primary division, it integrates IPC elements; the junior secondary program uses bilingual instruction and prepares students for IGCSE as a bridge to senior secondary studies.[16]
At the senior secondary level, Dingwen Academy Hangzhou is listed by the International Baccalaureate as an authorized IB World School for the Diploma Programme.[2] The school also offers A‑Level and Advanced Placement pathways; it appears on Pearson Edexcel’s mainland center list as center no. 96988 for International GCSE and A‑Level examinations.[17][18]
Extracurricular activities and recognition
Local coverage highlights programs linking natural sciences with co‑curricular offerings, stating the school hosts city events and competitions.[5] School pages describe arts offerings and sports such as swimming and tennis.[14] In November 2025, Hangzhou Daily reported that Dingwen Academy's eco‑innovation center was presented at the United Nations China Youth Environment Forum in Hong Kong; national coverage of the forum was carried by China News Service.[6][7]
Admissions and oversight
The district education bureau listed the school among local private schools taking online admissions in 2025.[19] City education reporting also noted that two city‑approved private schools, including Cloud Valley School and Dingwen Academy Hangzhou, conduct citywide supplemental admissions when seats remain after the main round.[20] A June 2025 Zhejiang Daily feature discussed the school's philosophy on school boarding to build independence and community.[21]
