Dasht-e-Goran (Urdu: دشت گوران) is an administrative subdivision (tehsil) and sub-division of Kalat District in the Balochistan province of Pakistan.[2]

History

Dasht-e-Goran has historically been a key part of the Kalat State and later the Kalat District. In 2017, the area became a point of administrative discussion following the creation of the Surab District (Shaheed Sikandarabad). While parts of the region were initially notified for inclusion in Surab, local tribal elders and political leaders successfully advocated for its retention within the Kalat District due to historical and cultural ties to the Kalat plateau.[2]

Geography

The name "Dasht-e-Goran" translates to "The Plain of the Wild Ass," though it is more commonly associated with the "Plain of the Goran" (a reference to local tribal or social groups). It is a high-altitude arid plain situated between the cities of Kalat and Surab. The landscape is characterized by wide valleys suitable for seasonal grazing and rain-fed agriculture.

Demographics

As of the 2023 Census of Pakistan, the population of the Dasht-e-Goran sub-division is approximately 25,461.[1] The inhabitants are predominantly Brahui, with major tribes including the Zehri, Mengal, and Kambrani. The primary language spoken is Brahui, with Balochi also widely understood.

Administration

The tehsil is a "Sub-Division" under the Kalat District administration. It consists of several mouzas (villages), including:

  • Surmassang
  • Dat
  • Muhammadzai
  • Baincha (partial)

Economy

The economy is primarily based on livestock and dry-land farming. The area is known for its hardy breeds of sheep and goats. In recent years, the installation of tube wells has allowed for limited cultivation of fruits like apples and peaches, though the region remains largely rural and dependent on seasonal rainfall.[3]
