List of co-districts of Assam
Co-Districts are decentralized administrative units in the Indian state of Assam. It was created to improve governance by bringing essential public services closer to citizens and enhancing administrative efficiency.[1] These units function as sub-district administrative divisions and are headed by a Co-District Commissioner.[2] In present the total number of co-districts are 49.
History
Assam became the first state in India to implement this specific decentralized administrative structure.[3] The initiative was rolled out in two phases:
Phase I
On 4 and 5 October 2024, the Government of Assam operationalized 39 co-districts across 21 parent districts.[4]
Phase II
In August 2025, 10 additional co-districts were inaugurated, bringing the total number to 49.[5]
Functions
Co-districts are responsible for delivering a range of essential administrative and public services at the local level, including:
- Land revenue administration
- Issuance of certificates (such as caste, income, and residence)
- Regulation of public distribution systems
- Exercise of magisterial powers
- Disaster management, including flood relief and fire compensation
