Claretian University is a private university in Nigeria. It is owned by the Claretian Missionary Fathers (CMF) with its subsidiary, The Claretian University Education Foundation (CUEF). It is located in Nekede, Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State. The university offers majors in Computer Sciences (Cyber Security, Information Technology, Software Engineering and Computer Science), Philosophy, and Economic Sciences (Economics, Accounting, Criminology and Security Studies).[1]

National University Accreditation

National University Commission (NUC) gave its approval in 2021 to the university to start operations.[2] It was listed as one of the 20 private universities that were approved in Nigeria. This was announced by The Honorable Minister of Education, Mal. Adamu Adamu at the State House after the weekly meeting of the council.[3]

In December 2024, the National University Commission report on the accreditation of Claretian University stated interim status on its Nursing Science with a program score of 71.25%.[4]

Although still young compared to many Nigerian universities, Claretian University has gradually positioned itself as an emerging faith-based institution focused on academic discipline, moral formation, and professional training. However, like many newly established universities, it faces both opportunities and challenges as it continues to grow and define its identity within Nigeria's competitive higher education sector.[5]

Historical Background and Founding Vision

The idea of Claretian University grew out of the educational mission of the Claretian missionaries in Nigeria. The Claretians, a Roman Catholic religious congregation founded by Anthony Mary Claret in Spain in the nineteenth century, have historically been involved in missionary work, pastoral ministry, and educational development across the world.[6]

In Nigeria, the congregation had already established educational institutions such as the Claretian Institute of Philosophy in Nekede. Over time, the missionaries expanded their vision toward creating a full university capable of providing broader academic opportunities to young Nigerians. This vision eventually led to the establishment of Claretian University in 2021 after approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC).[7]

The founders justified the creation of the institution partly by the growing demand for university education in southeastern Nigeria, particularly in Imo State, which records a high number of candidates sitting for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations annually.[8]

The university's motto, often expressed as “Redeeming the future through education,” reflects the Catholic educational philosophy of combining intellectual development with moral formation.[9]

Location and Campus Structure

The main campus of the university is located at Maryland, Nekede, on the outskirts of Owerri, the capital city of Imo State. The take-off campus occupies more than 21 hectares of land and hosts the university's academic buildings and administrative structures.

Beyond the main campus, the institution has plans for expansion with additional land holdings in other parts of Imo State, including Nkwerre and Nwangele Local Government Areas. These planned campuses suggest the founders’ long-term vision of building a multi-campus university system capable of supporting various academic disciplines and research centres.[10]

The location in Nekede places the university within an area already known for academic activity, as the community hosts several tertiary institutions. This environment provides both opportunities for collaboration and competition.

Academic Structure and Programmes

The academic structure of Claretian University of Nigeria, located in Nekede in Imo State, is organized into several schools that oversee teaching, research, and academic development within their respective disciplines. As a relatively young private university, the institution began with a modest number of programmes but has gradually expanded its academic offerings in response to educational demands in Nigeria.[11]

Each school within the university is responsible for specific fields of study and operates through departments that manage individual degree programmes. The university places particular emphasis on technology, social sciences, humanities, and health sciences, reflecting its goal of producing graduates who are intellectually competent, professionally skilled, and morally responsible.[12]

School of Computing and Technology

The School of Computing and Technology focuses on modern digital education and technological innovation. The programmes in this school aim to equip students with knowledge in computing systems, software development, information security, and digital communication technologies.[13]

  • Public Health
  • Physiotherapy

These programmes prepare students for careers in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, public health institutions, and community healthcare services.[15]

Matriculation and Convocation

Matriculation

Claretian University had its maiden matriculation ceremony in 2022, at its Maryland campus in Nekede, Owerri, Imo state, welcoming 75 students on board. The new students came from 11 states in Nigeria and chose their studies from the three departments in the university.[16] A total of 152 students were admitted  for the 2022/2023 academic session.[17][18]

On 19 May 2023, CUN had its second matriculation. It was stated that, "the university has witnessed an outstanding growth of 60% in its student population as compared to last year. It is indeed a great improvement from its maiden."[19]

Their fourth matriculation ceremony had 215 students for  the 2024/2025 academic session. During the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Wencelaus Madu, while addressing the students, "charged them to live up to the highest standards of integrity, discipline, and academic excellence as they embark on their educational journey."[20]

Convocation

In November 2025, Claretian University of Nigeria celebrated its first convocation ceremony. Six Students made first Class from the five program the university run.[21][22]

Again in 2025, Claretian University of Nigeria (CUN) was gifted an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Center (ICT). It was built and donated by Distinguished Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, Senator representing Imo East (Owerri Zone). The Center marked an enhanced digital learning by the university community.[23]

The university has a work program where students are allowed to work and get paid while carrying out their studies. This is to help lessen the financial stress from their parents.[24]

Administration

Claretian University is governed by the Claretian Missionaries through the Claretian University Education Foundation. As a faith-based institution, many of its administrative leaders are members of the Catholic clergy.[25]

Infrastructure and Facilities

As a developing university, Claretian University continues to invest in infrastructure to support academic learning and research. One of the major developments in recent years was the construction of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre sponsored by Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi. The facility is designed to support digital learning, computer-based testing, and information technology training.[26]

The campus environment is relatively quiet and structured, reflecting the discipline typical of religious institutions. According to reports from university sources, the institution enforces strict policies against cultism, examination malpractice, and other forms of misconduct.

Despite its youth, Claretian University has several positive features:

  1. Strong moral and disciplinary culture As a Catholic institution, the university emphasizes ethical conduct and responsible behavior among students.
  2. Small class sizes With a relatively small student population, students may benefit from closer interaction with lecturers.
  3. Growing academic programmes The gradual introduction of health and technology programmes indicates a focus on practical and employable skills.
  4. Commitment to digital learning Investments in ICT facilities show an attempt to integrate technology into education.
