Chaudhary Ghulam Hussain

Chaudhary Ghulam Hussain Lassanvi (1922 – 1992) was a prominent politician, social reformer, and spiritual leader from Jammu and Kashmir. He earned the title "Gujjar Gandhi" for applying Gandhi's principles to improve the life of the Gujjar community.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and social work

Hailing from Laasana village in Rajouri district, Lasaanvi was born in a family Kohli clan of Muslim Gujjars.[3][2] He was inspired by the Indian independence movement and Mahatma Gandhi's teachings, he devoted his life to eradicating social injustices and championing the rights of the Gujjar community in Indian Kashmir, who were largely nomadic and disadvantaged in terms of social and educational opportunities. His selfless efforts led to him being linked to Gandhi, embodying the spirit of peaceful activism and social change.[3][5]

Political career

Lassanvi was a prominent figure in regional politics of Jammu and Kashmir. As a founding member of the Jammu and Kashmir Rajya Sabha, he became its inaugural Deputy Chairman. Within the Indian National Congress, he held key positions, including the President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee. Throughout his career, he championed marginalized communities, such as Gujjars and Bakarwals.[3] He is credited with the foundation of the Gujjar-Jat conference in Jammu and Kashmir, a social organization established in 1931, and he served as its president.[3][6][1]

Legacy

Choudhary Ghulam Hussain Lassanvi's impact on the Gujjar community in Jammu and Kashmir is profound. He spearheaded a social political movement, empowering future generations of Gujjar leaders through his work in education, justice and advocacy. Today, his legacy remains a symbol of the community's quest for identity and rights , influencing regional politics.[7][3]
