Dr. Arthur Holly Compton, internationally famous physicist of the University of Chicago, winner of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1927, has accepted appointment to the vacancy as Chancellor of Washington University. Dr. Compton, who was here today, at the home of Edward Mallinckrodt, 16 Westmoreland place, announced that he would assume the chancellorship, as educational and administrative head of the university, as rapidly as he is freed from Federal Government commitments, involving scientific research for the war. Akin, chairman of a committee to select a successor to Compton, who announced last April 12 he planned to retire as soon as a new chancellor could be named, said the interim appointment was made to permit Compton to leave late this year on a special mission to India and Japan. Compton will continue to serve the university as Distinguished Service Professor of Natural History, a newly-created post. The specific date when Shepley will take over as chancellor was not announced. Appointment of an interim chancellor also will permit the committee to continue to examine candidates without the pressure of an immediate decision, Akin said. Shepley will continue to work with the committee in selecting a permanent chancellor, he said.
