Caritas University is a private Catholic university in Amorji-Nike, Enugu State, Nigeria.[1][2] Approved by both state and church authorities, the institution aims to revive the long-standing tradition of Catholic education while providing education grounded in moral values.

Origin

Caritas University was approved by the federal government of Nigeria on December 16, 2004.[3] It was officially opened on January 21, 2005 by the federal Minister for Education, Prof. Fabian Osuji. The formal opening was on January 31, 2005. The pioneer students of 250 matriculated on May 28, 2005.

It is the second Catholic university in Nigeria founded by Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Mathew Paul Edeh C.S.Sp, OFR after Madonna University. The proprietor of the University is the Congregation of Sisters of Jesus the Saviour.

Objective

The University's principal objective is to remain at the frontline of centres of learning, teaching and research. Caritas University aims to improve the local community as well as actively contributing to the needs of the international community in the aforementioned areas.[4]

Administration and governance

Caritas University is a private Catholic university located in Amorji‑Nike, Enugu State, Nigeria. The institution is governed by a structure that includes the Founder and Chancellor, Governing Council, Vice‑Chancellor, and principal officers responsible for academic and administrative leadership. The university aims to combine academic excellence with moral and value‑based education in line with its Catholic heritage.[5]

Founder and Chancellor

  • Very Rev. Fr. Professor E. M. P. Edeh, C.S.Sp, OFR – Founder of Caritas University, having established the university in 2004 with the mission to promote quality education grounded in moral values and Catholic tradition.[6]

Vice‑Chancellor

  • Professor Michael Uchenna Orji, JP, Ph.D – Vice‑Chancellor of Caritas University, responsible for the academic and administrative management of the institution. He has served in this capacity leading strategic development, student welfare, and academic programme quality.[7][8]

Other principal officers

Caritas University’s administrative leadership includes additional officers such as the Registrar, Bursar, and University Librarian, who oversee institutional records, finances, and library systems respectively.[9]

The university operates on a faculty system. The university operates six faculties: Education and Arts, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Management Sciences, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences.

Convocation

Caritas University holds convocation ceremonies annually to confer degrees and diplomas on graduating students and to celebrate academic achievement.

2015 1st First convocation ceremony following initial graduations.
2018 4th Convocation ceremony marking expansion of academic programmes.
2021 9th The university held a long‑awaited convocation with valedictorian addresses as part of celebrations of academic excellence.[10]
2022 10th & 11th (combined) Caritas University announced combined convocation ceremonies for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 graduating classes.[11]
