Bronson Community Schools is a public school district in Branch County, in southern Michigan. It serves Bronson, the townships of Bronson, Gilead, and Noble, and parts of the townships of Batavia, Bethel, Ovid, and Matteson. It also serves part of Burr Oak Township in St. Joseph County.[4]

History

The first school in Bronson was established in 1829 but operated only briefly. A more organized school followed in 1831, housed in a log building. A public school district was established in 1839, and a frame school was built. It became a union school district in 1858, and a larger building was built. It received a large brick addition in 1878, by which time the school housed about 300 students in all grades. By 1887, the first class graduated from the high school housed in the building.[5] Located at Lincoln and Chicago Streets, the building received several additions over the next several years.[6]

Architect E.S. Batterson of Kalamazoo designed a large addition to the school in 1928.[7] The 1901 section was retained and remodeled. The construction was completed in February 1929 and included a gymnasium with a stage, science laboratories, kindergarten, and specialized rooms for typing, agricultural, domestic, and commercial sciences.[8] The building was expanded again around 1954, with a new gymnasium/auditorium and music, shop, and agricultural rooms.[9]

In 1946, the consolidation of the Bronson district with several school districts in the surrounding area created Bronson Community Schools. A new elementary school was built in 1950, named after Florence Elgin Anderson, a district teacher for fifty years. Robert Ryan Elementary, named after a long-serving school board member, opened in November 1959.[6][10]

The current high school opened in fall 1965, and the building was celebrated with an open house on February 25, 1966.[11] New additions were built at the former high school, and it became the district's junior high. But by 1980, enrollment had declined and the district faced a financial crisis. The junior high building was closed as a school and the students joined the high school, forming Bronson Junior/Senior High School. But by 1986, enrollment had increased, and the junior high reopened as a building for grades five and six. It was renamed Chicago Street School and the 1929 section was torn down. Additions were built at the high school, Chicago Street School and Anderson Elementary in 1998.[6]
