Boris Margeta (born 1972) is a Slovenian water polo referee and the current president of the World Water Polo Referees’ Association (WWR). Widely recognized as one of the top referees, he has officiated numerous high-profile games since the early 2000s.[1]

Career

Margeta's international career includes refereeing at every Summer Olympics from 2000 to 2024, except missing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to a family illness.[2] He has also officiated across multiple FINA World Championships, World Cups, World League Super Finals, European Championships.

In July 2025, World Aquatics praised his refereeing records.[3] As of the 2025–2026 season, Margeta, along with Greek referee Georgios Stavridis, is considered one of the two top water polo referees worldwide.[4][5]

Other activities

He has presided over multiple FINA World Championships since 2001, World Cups, World League finals, and European Champions League finals.[6] He also continues to conduct referee training under European Aquatics events.[7]
