The Bobowa Tunnel (Tunel w Bobowej), also known as the Bobowski Tunnel, is a railway tunnel in Bobowa, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of southern Poland. It carries the Tarnów–Leluchów railway beneath voivodeship road 981 on the eastern side of Bobowa station.[1]
At 160 m (520 ft) in length, it is one of the newer railway tunnels in Poland, having entered service in 2006.[1] It was created in connection with the modernisation of road no. 981 in Bobowa, where a railway overbridge was built as part of the same investment programme.[2]
Description
The tunnel lies on railway line no. 96 between Bobowa and Bobowa Miasto.[1] Atlas Kolejowy gives its chainage as km 48.084–48.244 and describes it as a single-track structure in regular use.[1]
The tunnel passes beneath voivodeship road 981, which crosses the railway on the eastern side of Bobowa.[1][2] Atlas Kolejowy notes that the structure is electrified and single-track.[1]
A geological engineering review published in 2024 lists the Bobowa Tunnel among railway tunnels in Poland and gives its length as 160 m (520 ft).[3]
History
The Bobowa Tunnel is not a 19th-century mountain railway tunnel like the older structures on line 96 at Kamionka Wielka and Żegiestów. Instead, it was brought into service on 31 March 2006.[1]
Its construction was associated with the modernisation of voivodeship road 981 on the Zborowice–Krzyżówka section. According to documentation published by the Marshal's Office of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, that project was carried out in 2004–2006 and included the construction of a railway overbridge in Bobowa.[2]
Local descriptions of Bobowa station note that the tunnel was opened in 2006 on the site of an earlier overbridge and that it runs beneath road no. 981.[4]
