Bhupen Kumar Borah (born 30 October 1970) is an Indian politician from Assam currently affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).[3] He is a former member of the Indian National Congress (INC),[4] where he served as the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee from 2021 to 2025 before resigning and switching parties in February 2026.[1][5][6][7] He served two-terms as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly representing Bihpuria from 2006 to 2016.[8][9][10]

Early life

Bhupen Borah was born on 30 October 1970 in Pohumora, Lakhimpur, Assam.[11] He graduated from North Lakhimpur College and Dibrugarh University.[10][11] He was vice-president of North Lakhimpur College Students' Union and general secretary of Dibrugarh University Postgraduate Students' Union.[10][11]

Political career

Borah was president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress.[11] He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Bihpuria in 2006, and re-elected in 2011.[11] He was a spokesperson and parliamentary secretary for the Government of Assam during Tarun Gogoi’s tenure as Chief Minister.[11][12] In 2013, he was appointed a secretary of the All India Congress Committee.[12] In 2021, he was appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
