Bhojpuri profanity

The profane words used in Bhojpuri language can be divided into several categories.

Kumbhakarna ๐‘‚๐‘‚ณ๐‘‚ง๐‘‚น๐‘‚ฆ๐‘‚๐‘‚ฉ๐‘‚ข/ เค•เฅเค‚เคญเค•เคฐเคจ It's a mythological character from Ramayana and is used for someone who sleeps too much.[1]
Narada ๐‘‚ข๐‘‚ฐ๐‘‚ฉ๐‘‚  / เคจเคพเคฐเคฆ used for a double dealer.[1]
Manthara ๐‘‚ง๐‘‚ข๐‘‚น๐‘‚Ÿ๐‘‚ฉ๐‘‚ฐ / เคฎเค‚เคฅเคฐเคพ used for a crooked woman.[1]
Maleccha ๐‘‚ง๐‘‚ช๐‘‚ต๐‘‚“๐‘‚น / เคฎเคฒเฅ‡เค› Used for Wretched fellow[1]
Ravana ๐‘‚ฉ๐‘‚ฐ๐‘‚ซ๐‘‚ข / เคฐเคพเคตเคจ For a Cruel, Tryant person.[1]

Such profane words are used to imply the quality to the birds and animals in the person the words are being used. Some of such words are:[1]

๐‘‚ฃ๐‘‚ฑ๐‘‚จ๐‘‚๐‘‚น๐‘‚๐‘‚š piyakkarฬค drunkard

Due to patriarchy in the society women are generally the first target of these words. Abuse to one's mother, sister or daughter sounds more pinching.[2]

  • sฤra (๐‘‚ฎ๐‘‚ฐ๐‘‚ฉ/เคธเคพเคฐ) : Literally means wife's brother or sibling-in-law. The redundant form saravฤ is also used.
