The Battle of Bulanty is a military battle between the Kazakh Khanate, led by Abulkhair Khan against the Dzungar Khanate in 1727. In 1723, the Dzungar forces led by Tsewang Rabtan[8] and his commanders[9] invaded the Middle and Senior Jüz,[10] waging a new war against the Kazakhs. During the invasion, the Dzungars had captured regions on Jetisu, Southern Kazakhstan, Syr Darya, Fergana Valley, Irtysh, Shu River, Talas River, Arys and Boroldai rivers[11][12] as well as causing a mass migration from indiscriminate attacks on civilians and with forced displacement, known as the Years of the Great Disasters.[13] Later by 1726 after a peace with the Kalmyks, the Khans of all three jüzes united and organized a meeting on Ordabasy, creating a force led by Abulkhair khan with Abilmambet, Samake, Jolbars, Barak and more Kazakh batyrs joining his forces.[14] In 1727, in the foothills of Ulytau, the Kazakhs had attacked the Dzungar army, against the commander — Shono-Dov, as both sides took heavy casualties and with the Kazakhs defeating the Dzungars and calling it the "Kalmak kirilgan" or "Where Kalmaks perished".[15][16] After the battle, the Kazakhs still hadn't liberated regions like Jetisu, they soon later made another peace agreement with the Kalmyks.[17] Another meeting took place as they chose Abulkhair again to command the new united Militia against the Dzungars, for a final showdown against the Dzungar army.[18]
