The India–Bangladesh cricket rivalry is one of the most intense and biggest sports rivalry in the world. Matches between the teams are considered some of the biggest in the world in any at age level of sports. It's also called Asian Clásico. India dominated the rivalry from its inception in 1988 until 2007, after which the rivalry became more competitive in limited-overs cricket, with Bangladesh managing victories in both bilateral series and ICC tournament fixtures.

The two teams have played a total of 75 times, with India winning 63 matches and Bangladesh winning 9.[1] In Tests, ODIs and T20Is India has been victorious in more games than Bangladesh, while Bangladesh has won more bilateral series in ODIs.[2] In ICC World Cups, the two sides have met head to head in 5 matches, with India winning 4 of them. Both India and Bangladesh have faced each other in the ICC Cricket World Cup, the ICC T20 World Cup, as well as other prestigious tournaments.[3][4]

The tense relations between the two countries, resulting in bitter diplomatic relations and a conflict that triggered Indo-Bangla geopolitical tensions, laid the foundation for an intense sporting rivalry between the two countries, who shared a common cricketing tradition.[5]

Background

After the partition of the country in 1947, initially Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan, before it became independent, since then a negative view of Indians has been born in the minds of Bangladeshis(East Pakistani).[1] Till 2000, Bangladesh was an emerging cricketing power while India was one of the most successful teams in the history of cricket. Bangladesh became a member of the ICC in 1977 and a full member in 2000. India first toured Bangladesh in the 1988 Asia Cup. This was the first time the two teams met each-other in Chattogram, where India defeated Bangladesh by 9 wickets.[2] Bangladesh toured India for the first time in 1990 and faced India in Chandigarh, where they also lost to India by 9 wickets.[3]

After gaining Test status in 2000, Bangladesh played the first Test in their history against India at home.[4] India toured Bangladesh in 2005 and won the first match by just 11 runs, but Bangladesh defeated India for the first time in the second ODI in Dhaka.[5]
