Aris Syntetos
Aris Syntetos FAcadMathSci is Distinguished Research Professor of Decision Science and the DSV Chair of Logistics at Cardiff University. He is an expert on the interface between Mathematics and Operations Management, and specializes in logistics and manufacturing. His research has is highly cited, and features in best-selling software packages. His work has led to enormous financial and environmental impact.[1]
He is editor in chief of the IMA Journal of Management Mathematics (IMAMAN) published by Oxford University Press, and he was appointed in the first cohort of Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, established by the British Academy in 2023.
Education
Syntetos received his PhD from the Business School at Brunel University in 2001. His doctoral thesis was Forecasting of intermittent Demand.[2] Professor John Boylan supervised the thesis. He was awarded an MSc in Quality Management from the University of Stirling in 1996, and a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Piraeus in 1993. He completed his Military Service as a Greek National 2001-03.
Career and research
Syntetos is internationally recognised for his work bridging mathematics and management, applying rigorous theory to address real‑world challenges in supply chains and operations management.[1] His research has received considerable funding from governments and industry, including more than £700,000 from the EPSRC in 2017 for a grant to support the project ‘Resilient Remanufacturing Networks: Forecasting, Informatics and Holons’.[3] Syntetis is principally known for the Syntetos-Boylan Approximation, a standard forecasting method, and the Syntetos-Boylan-Croston approach to forecast classification.
Syntetos founded the joint University-Industry PARC Institute of Manufacturing, Logistics and Inventory at Cardiff University, and he established the university's strategic partnership with DSV, the world's largest third party logistics provider. With John Boylan, Syntetos published Intermittent demand forcasting: Context, methods and applications with Wiley in 2021.
Prizes and honours
With Professor Bahman Rostami-Tabar, Syntetos was awarded the 2024 Goodeve Medal by the Operational Research (OR) Society for a ground-breaking article published in the Journal of the Operational Research Society (JORS). Their article, 'To aggregate or not to aggregate: Forecasting of finite autocorrelated demand', was co-authored with Professor Zied Babai from and focuses on temporal aggregation in demand forecasting. Their process of grouping data into larger time intervals has significant implications for decision-making in healthcare and supply chains.[4]
