Anton Franz Ferdinand Wilhelm Karl Graf von Magnis (9 May 1862 – 17 October 1944) was a German-speaking Silesian and Moravian aristocrat, landowner, mining entrepreneur, and politician of the Centre Party. He belonged to the noble Magnis family and is chiefly associated with the family estates at Eckersdorf/Neurode in the County of Glatz and at Strassnitz in Moravia. He was also a member of the Reichstag and of the Prussian House of Lords.[1][2][3]
Early life and family
Magnis was born at Eckersdorf (today Bożków) in Prussian Silesia on 9 May 1862. He was the son of Wilhelm Ernst Adolf von Magnis and Gabriele Deym von Střítež. He studied law at the universities of Breslau, Leipzig, and Berlin, passed the Referendarexamen, and subsequently devoted himself to the management of his landed estates and industrial interests.[1]
Estates and industrial interests
The Magnis family held extensive possessions in both Prussian Silesia and Moravia. Later, the estates of Strassnitz and Eckersdorf/Neurode were united in the hands of Anton Franz von Magnis.[2]
In the Neurode district, the family was involved in coal mining and related extractive enterprises. A mining-historical study states that in 1898 Count Magnis, owner of Eckersdorf and Neurode, and Count Pilati consolidated their mines into the Gewerkschaft Neuroder Kohlen- und Tonwerke, with Magnis holding three quarters of the shares.[4] Austria-Forum adds that the Magnis mining administration had moved its seat to Neurode Castle by 1899 and was reorganized in 1901 under that name.[2] Archival holdings of the Polish State Archives preserve records of the Gewerkschaft Neuroder Kohlen- und Tonwerke for the years 1912–1944.[5]
Political career
Magnis was active in Catholic conservative politics. He sat in the Reichstag as a representative of the Centre Party for the Reichenbach–Neurode constituency before 1918.[2] A scholarly prosopographical register of the Prussian House of Lords identifies him as a fideicommiss owner and mining industrialist, a Reichstag member of the Centre Party, and a member of the Prussian House of Lords from 1902.[3]
Later life
After the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the Moravian estates of the Magnis family were affected by the changed political framework in Czechoslovakia. According to Austria-Forum, the Strassnitz domains were defended against the early stages of Czechoslovak land reform by the estate administrator Max Hrdliczka, and the holdings were temporarily expanded after 1918.[2]
Magnis died at Strassnitz on 17 October 1944.[1]
Legacy
Anton Franz von Magnis is representative of the late imperial Catholic aristocratic landowning elite whose influence combined estate ownership, mining interests, and parliamentary activity across Silesia and Moravia. His career also illustrates the cross-border character of noble property and political life in the eastern provinces of Prussia and the Habsburg lands.[1][2][3]
