Alleged Chinese espionage in Greece

The alleged Chinese espionage in Greece is a Greek and French ongoing investigation, as a senior officer of the Hellenic Air Force was arrested in February 2026, suspected of spying and passing classified military information to China. The case has implications for both Greece and NATO allies as the case might compromise secret military data.

Background

Following a long term investigation of several months by Greek and French authorities, early in February 2026 a Hellenic Air Force colonel was arrested by Greek military authorities.[1][2] The officer was suspected of spying and providing Chinese intelligence with sensitive military data. The investigation started after a tip off from a western security partner, as reported, the US Central Intelligence Agency.[1][2][3] The identity of the officer has not yet been revealed, but local sources say he is in his 50s and served in several roles within units responsible for communications and electronic systems, that gave him access also to NATO relevant and Greek military networks.[4][5]

Confession and charges

Multiple reports claim that the suspect, during his questioning by Greek military prosecutors and intelligence personnel, had confessed his guilt of transmitting classified military information to the Chinese. Investigators say that he may have been recruited while travelling abroad, possibly at a NATO related event or another foreign trip, and was reportedly paid in return for the information.[5]

National and international implications

According to Greek authorities and NATO, the case is regarded as a serious breach of security due to the information involved. Greek official state they are collaborating with several allied intelligence services.[1] This incident raises further concern for Europe regarding foreign espionage, as there were several other incidents where foreign nationals were arrested for taking photos of military sites and trying to collect sensitive information.[6]

Ongoing proceedings

As of February 2026, the legal and military proceedings against the officer are still ongoing. He has been kept in custody and was set to appear before a military judge. Greek defense officials are also investigating whether others were involved or if there is a larger network behind the case.
